KMC publish their official X12 finishes and the list is Silver, Aurora, Ti Gold, Ti Gold and Black, and EPT. There is no Silver and Black X12 in KMC’s own catalogue. That leaves two likely explanations: the chain you are looking at is the two-tone Ti Gold and Black X12 described by a supplier who read the colours rather than the model name, or it is an X11 in nickel and black that has been catalogued as a 12-speed. Those are very different parts.

We are checking with the supplier and we would rather tell you that than publish a specification we cannot stand behind. Talk to us before ordering and we will confirm exactly which chain and which speed count is in the box.

What is true of any KMC X12: 126 links as supplied, 234 g, the CL552 connector, and KMC’s explicit statement that the X12 is not compatible with SRAM T-Type Transmission, SRAM eTap AXS or SRAM Flattop road chains. If your bike runs SRAM AXS or Transmission, no X12 is the right chain for it.

Why does this page say the variant is being verified?

Because KMC's own published X12 colour range does not include a Silver and Black. Rather than invent a specification, we are confirming with the supplier whether this is the two-tone Ti Gold and Black X12 or an 11-speed chain listed in error. Ask us and we will tell you what is actually in stock.

What should I do if I need a 12-speed chain now?

Talk to us. The X12 in silver is confirmed and in the same range, and we can tell you which chain suits your drivetrain. It is a five-minute conversation that avoids buying the wrong part.

Which 12-speed drivetrains does it NOT fit?

This is the important one. KMC state the X12 is not compatible with SRAM T-Type (Transmission), SRAM eTap AXS, or SRAM Flattop road chains. Those systems use different roller and pin geometry, and fitting an X12 to one is a safety problem rather than just a shifting one. If you run any SRAM AXS or Transmission groupset, this is not your chain.

Does it work with Shimano 12-speed?

KMC own two official sites and they do not agree on this - their corporate site lists Shimano among the compatible 12-speed systems, their US store does not. We would rather tell you that than guess. SRAM Eagle and Campagnolo 12-speed are confirmed by both. If you run Shimano 12-speed, talk to us before ordering and we will check with the supplier.

Do I need to shorten the chain?

Almost certainly. Chains are supplied over-length so they fit the widest range of bikes, and yours must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. You will need a chain tool. If you are not sure how many links to remove, bring the bike to us with the old chain and we will size it against it.

Is a quick link included?

KMC do not state on their own product pages that a connector is packed in the box, and they sell MissingLink connectors as separate items, so we do not claim one is included. Check the packet - and if it is not there, the matching KMC connector is CL555 for 11-speed and CL552 for 12-speed. Ask us and we will confirm before you ride.

How often should I replace a chain?

Measure it rather than guessing - a chain checker costs very little. Replace at around 0.5% stretch for a 11 or 12-speed drivetrain and 0.75% for wider chains. A worn chain left on will wear the cassette and chainrings to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one.
