Product description

About this product

The PD-R550 is Shimano’s entry point into SPD-SL, and they are refreshingly direct about who it is for: the larger entry target makes it easier to clip into, which Shimano say plainly is good for anyone new to clipless pedals.

That is not marketing softness. The first few weeks on clipless pedals are genuinely awkward, and a pedal that finds the cleat on the first try at a junction rather than the third is worth more to a new rider than forty grams of weight saving.

The body is composite with a stainless steel plate on the contact face – the same idea as the more expensive pedals, which is what keeps the platform from wearing under the cleat. Sealed bearings set wide apart on a steel spindle, and a wide spring tension adjustment range so you can start soft and firm it up as your confidence grows. 310 g the pair, with SM-SH11 yellow cleats included.

It sits alongside the newer PD-RS500 in Shimano’s entry range rather than having been replaced by it – both are current.

Questions

Good to know

Is this a good first clipless pedal?

Yes, and that is exactly what Shimano designed it for. The larger entry target means you find the cleat first time at a junction, which matters far more in the first month than any weight figure.

Is it discontinued?

No. It sits alongside the newer PD-RS500 in Shimano's entry range - the RS500 gets more promotion, but the R550 is still a current, listed product.

Are cleats included?

Yes - SM-SH11 yellow cleats with 6 degrees of float, the most forgiving option and the right one while you are learning.

Will these fit my shoes and pedals?

These are SPD-SL road cleats. They bolt to a three-bolt road shoe and clip into SPD-SL road pedals only. They will not fit two-bolt SPD mountain bike shoes or SPD pedals, which is the commonest mistake people make ordering cleats. Check your shoe sole - three holes in a triangle means SPD-SL, two holes in a line means SPD.

What do I gain by spending more?

The 105 PD-R7000 is around 45 g lighter the pair and has a stiffer, wider platform. Neither is worth it while you are still learning to clip in. Spend the difference on shoes instead.

Can I make clipping out easier?

Yes - on the pedal, not the cleat. Shimano SPD-SL pedals have an adjustable spring tension screw. Wind it to the softest setting while you are learning, then tighten it once clipping out is second nature.

How often do cleats need replacing?

When the walking pads are visibly worn down, when you can rock the shoe in the pedal, or when unclipping starts feeling unpredictable. Worn cleats release unexpectedly, which is how people fall at junctions. They are a cheap part - replace them before they become a problem.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?
