Highlights

The three-handle pattern, in steel

Sealed, coated inside, and it stacks flat.

Three-handle top

One person carries two cans, or two people carry one. It is not decoration.

Coated inside

The inside of a fuel can is what rusts first, and this one is protected.

Locking cap

A screw cap with a pin, so corrugations cannot shake it open.

Three sizes

5, 10 and 20 litres, all stacking flat against each other.

Product description

About this product

Metal Oil Jerry Can – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The design has not changed since the 1930s because it was right the first time.

The three-handle top is the detail that gives it away as the proper pattern. One person carries two cans with the outer handles; two people carry one can between them; and one person uses all three to pour with control. Plastic cans copy the shape and miss the point.

These are cold-rolled steel with an anti-rust coating inside as well as out, which matters because it is the inside that fails first on a fuel can. The screw cap seals with a locking pin so it cannot vibrate open on a corrugated road.

Flat sides mean they stack and sit tight against each other in a vehicle rather than rolling about.

Key Features

  • 5, 10 and 20 litre sizes
  • Cold-rolled steel with anti-rust coating inside and out
  • Military-pattern three-handle top
  • Screw cap with locking pin
  • Flat sides for stacking
  • Suits petrol, diesel and other fuels

Who It Suits

  • Overlanding and long-distance driving
  • Generators, boats, farms and sites
  • Emergency fuel reserve
  • Anywhere between fuel stations is a long way

Safety: carry fuel outside the passenger compartment where you can, never in direct sun for long periods, and open the cap slowly in heat because pressure builds. Fill to about 95 per cent and leave room for expansion. Never store fuel near an ignition source.

Buying a Metal Oil Jerry Can in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the metal oil jerry can at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every metal oil jerry can is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which metal oil jerry can suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the metal oil jerry can are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Why steel rather than plastic?

Steel does not degrade in sunlight, does not soften, and does not let fuel vapour permeate through the walls the way plastic does over time. It also survives being dropped off a roof rack. The trade is weight and the need to keep the coating intact.

Which size should I buy?

Twenty litres is the standard long-distance reserve and roughly 20 kg when full, which is at the limit of comfortable one-handed carrying. Ten litres is easier to handle and pour. Five is for generators, outboards and topping up. Many overlanders carry two 20s and a 5.

Can I store fuel in it long term?

For months, yes, in a cool shaded place with the cap sealed. Petrol degrades over time regardless of the container, so rotate it through the vehicle every few months rather than leaving the same fuel for a year. Diesel keeps longer but attracts water.

How do I stop it rusting?

The coating does the work, so the thing to avoid is damaging it. Do not scrape the inside, do not leave water in it, and dry it fully if it has been rinsed. Store it either full or completely dry: a part-empty can in a humid climate condenses water inside, and water is what starts the rust.

Can I carry it inside the vehicle?

Best not to. Fuel vapour in a closed cabin is both a health and a fire risk, and a leak inside is far worse than a leak outside. Roof rack, rear carrier or an open pickup bed.

Can I carry fuel in it on a vehicle?

Only a can designed and sealed for fuel, upright, secured so it cannot move, and never inside the passenger compartment. Vapour is the hazard rather than the liquid. Check the rules for any ferry crossing - the Zanzibar services restrict carriage of fuel and may refuse it.
