Product description

About this product

The cheapest piece of safety equipment you will ever own.

A shout carries a few hundred metres in still air, less in wind, and your voice gives out within minutes. A whistle carries much further, cuts through wind and foliage in a way a voice does not, takes almost no breath, and works for as long as you are conscious.

It is metal rather than plastic, so it will not crack in a pack or perish in the sun, and it weighs nothing. There is no reason not to have one clipped to a pack, a life jacket or a set of keys.

The signal worth knowing: three blasts, pause, three blasts. Three of anything is the international distress signal. One blast in reply means I hear you.

Questions

Good to know

What is the distress signal?

Three blasts, a pause, then three more, repeated. Three of anything, whistle blasts, torch flashes or fires, is the recognised distress signal. A single blast in reply means somebody has heard you and is coming.

Why not just shout?

Because shouting exhausts you within minutes and your voice fails exactly when you most need it. A whistle takes a fraction of the breath, carries much further, and is a sound nothing in nature makes, so it is recognised as human immediately.

Where should I keep it?

Somewhere you can reach one-handed without taking a pack off: a shoulder strap, a zip pull, a life jacket. A whistle at the bottom of a rucksack is no use to somebody who is trapped or injured.

Should children carry one?

Yes, and it is one of the best things you can give a child on a group trip. Teach them: stay where you are and blow three blasts. A lost child who stays put and signals is found quickly.

Does it work when wet?

Metal whistles keep working wet. Shake the water out if it sounds weak.
