Archery Arm Guard - Leather, Adjustable, 22 x 8 cm

Accessories

A leather forearm guard with adjustable straps. Not optional equipment: a bowstring slapping a bare forearm at 40 lb raises a welt that takes a week to fade and teaches you to flinch.

Highlights

It is not about the bruise, it is about the flinch

One string slap on a bare forearm and your body starts protecting itself - you twist the elbow, you drop the shoulder, and you cannot correct it because you do not know you are doing it. An arm guard stops the injury and, more importantly, stops the habit.

Leather

Tough enough to take a string strike repeatedly without cutting through or going hard.

22 x 8 cm

Covers the inside of the forearm where the string actually lands.

Adjustable straps

Fits over a bare arm or a sleeve, and tightens enough not to rotate.

Also keeps sleeves out of the string

On a long-sleeved shirt, loose fabric catching the string ruins the shot and hurts.

About this product

Archery Arm Guard – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

An arm guard is a strip of leather strapped to the inside of the bow forearm. It is the least glamorous thing in an archery kit and the piece most beginners regret skipping.

Here is what happens without one. The string, on release, travels back towards the bow and can catch the inside of your forearm – especially if your elbow is rotated slightly the wrong way, which almost every beginner-s is. At 40 lb it raises a long red welt that hurts for days. That in itself is bearable; what is not is what comes next. Your body remembers, and on the following shots you unconsciously twist the elbow away, drop the shoulder or flinch at release. That flinch is extremely hard to unlearn and it will cost you accuracy for years.

The guard removes the problem at the source. Wearing one from the first session means you never develop the flinch in the first place, which is why every club puts one on a beginner before they hand over a bow.

It does a second job in a long-sleeved shirt: it holds the sleeve flat. Loose fabric catching the string throws the arrow off and stings. In Tanzanian sun most people shoot in sleeves against sunburn, which makes this more relevant here than in cooler places.

Fit it firmly enough that it cannot rotate around the arm, with the leather sitting over the inside of the forearm rather than the outside. A guard that has spun round is no guard at all.

Buying a Archery Arm Guard in Dar es Salaam

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the archery arm guard at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every archery arm guard is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which archery arm guard suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Tanzania.

Spare parts and replacements for the archery arm guard are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Do I really need one?

Yes, from the first session. A string strike on a bare forearm hurts, and the flinch it teaches you costs far more than the pain. Every archery club puts one on a beginner before handing over a bow.

Which arm does it go on?

The bow arm - the one holding the bow out - on the inside of the forearm, where the string passes. If you shoot right-handed, that is your left forearm.

How tight should it be?

Tight enough that it cannot rotate around your arm when you move, loose enough not to restrict blood flow. A guard that has spun to the outside of the arm is doing nothing.

Why does the string hit my arm at all?

Usually because the bow elbow is rotated so the inside of the joint faces the string. Rotate the elbow outward so the crease of the elbow points down or sideways and the string clears. An instructor will spot it in one shot - but wear the guard while you learn.

Does it help with sleeves?

Yes, and in this climate that matters. Most people here shoot in long sleeves against the sun, and loose fabric catching the string throws the arrow and stings. The guard holds the sleeve flat.

How do I look after leather in this climate?

Keep it dry and out of direct sun when not in use. Leather left wet goes hard and cracks; leather baked in a car turns brittle. An occasional wipe with leather conditioner keeps it supple for years.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
