The BGM7X is Molten-s 12-panel size 7 basketball in synthetic leather, rated for indoor and outdoor play.
The twelve panels are the point. Almost every other basketball uses eight, arranged as four ribs and two caps. Molten split the surface into twelve, which puts considerably more seam length across the ball. Since grip on a basketball comes from your fingers catching in the channels rather than on the panel faces, that means wherever your hand lands, there is a channel under it. Players either love it immediately or take a week to adjust; almost nobody is neutral about it.
Synthetic leather sits between the two extremes of cover material. A premium indoor ball uses composite or genuine leather – soft, tacky, superb on a wooden floor, and ruined by concrete. A basic outdoor ball uses rubber – tough, grippy when dusty, and hard-feeling. Synthetic leather is tougher than composite and softer than rubber, which is what lets Molten rate this one for both surfaces.
Be clear about where it sits in Molten-s range. The BGMX tier is the entry level of Molten-s X-Series – the indoor-only BGGX and leather BGLX sat above it, and in the current range the BG4500 and BG5000 sit well above its descendant. It carries the FIBA Approved mark of its era, but it was never a FIBA official game ball; that was the GL7X, now the BG5000. It is a good, durable, distinctive ball rather than a competition one.
The X-Series has since been replaced by Molten-s BG range, so this is an older model. That is not a problem for a ball – basketball construction has not changed – but it is worth knowing if you are trying to match one you already own.
