Product description

About this product

This is the longer of Noeby’s two Leisure Big Game Pro boat rods – 1.83 m against the 1.68 m model – and the extra 15 cm buys you reach. On a boat that matters more than it sounds: steering a fish around the bow, keeping line clear of an outboard, or lifting a leader to a gaff all get easier with a slightly longer rod.

Everything else is the same design argument. One piece, so there is nothing to loosen under sustained load. Full glass, because glass bends much further than carbon before it fails and absorbs the shock of a strike at speed, which is the property that actually matters on a rod that is pulled on rather than cast with. A short 3+1 guide train with a 7.0 mm top ring, sized to let a heavy leader knot pass without catching.

At 50-80 lb it sits in the most useful class for this coast. Yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, wahoo, sailfish, big kingfish and heavy bottom work over the offshore reefs are all within it. Fish it with a 50 class conventional lever-drag reel and a matched line, and it will do everything an ordinary charter day asks of it.

Questions

Good to know

Should I buy the 1.83 m or the 1.68 m?

The 1.83 m gives you a little more reach for steering a fish around the boat and lifting a leader; the 1.68 m gives the fish less leverage and is easier in a crowded cockpit. Both are the same blank material and build. Most people buying one rod take the 1.83 m; boats fishing several rods at once often prefer the shorter.

Why a glass blank rather than carbon?

Carbon is lighter and more sensitive; glass is tougher and bends further before it breaks. On a big-game boat rod that spends hours bent double with a heavy drag on, glass's ability to absorb shock without shattering is worth more than sensitivity. It is why the trolling and stand-up end of the market still uses it.

What reel should go on it?

A 50 class conventional lever-drag reel with 50-80 lb line, or an equivalent braid with a mono topshot. Matching the rod, reel and line class is the whole point of the class system.

Where would I use this around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the channel out to Mafia, around Latham Island and north towards Pemba. Yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and big grouper are all within its class. It is a boat rod - not something to cast from a beach.

Can I cast with it?

No. It is a boat rod for trolling, drifting and bottom fishing. For casting, use a popping or shore rod - we stock both.

Is 704 g heavy?

For a full-glass big-game blank, that is normal and it is meant to be. Weight here comes from blank wall thickness, which is what lets the rod carry a heavy drag setting for an hour without complaint. It sits in a holder or a harness, not in your hand all day.

Some of these figures are marked as supplier figures - why?

Noeby publishes the Leisure Big Game range only on a site we cannot currently reach, so these numbers come from our supplier rather than from a Noeby specification we can point you at. We have published them as given and marked them, rather than dropping them or dressing them up. If a particular figure matters to your purchase, ask us and we will measure the rod in the shop.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the whole rod with fresh water after every trip, getting water under the reel seat and into the gimbal rather than just over the blank. Dry it before storage, and store it flat or butt-down rather than leaning under its own tension.
