About this product
Slow-pitch jigging rewards a blank that is precisely tuned. The rod has to load smoothly on the lift and release cleanly on the drop, because that release is what makes the jig flutter and what triggers the bite. Too stiff and the jig never flutters; too soft and you cannot lift the fish.
The S581/800 is built on Toray T1100G, which is near the top of what is available to rod builders – a high-modulus, high-strength carbon that lets a designer make a blank both thin-walled and stiff. On a slow-pitch rod that translates into a blank you can feel a jig working through, at 100 metres, with a strong current running.
It is a one-piece blank at 5 ft 8 in with a separating rear grip, so it packs to 126.8 cm without a ferrule in the working section. The tip measures 2.3 mm and the butt 12.6 mm, which is the taper that produces the slow-pitch curve. Guides are Fuji. Maximum drag is 20 kg and the jig rating is 100-350 g.
The Voyager series is Noeby’s offshore big-fish line and has now been retired from their current catalogue, so what is in the market is what remains. Off Dar es Salaam this rod is aimed at the deep drop-offs and pinnacles – amberjack, grouper, jobfish, snapper, kingfish and the dogtooth tuna that take a jig on the drop.
