The Big Game Pro II is the more sophisticated of Noeby’s Leisure big-game boat rods. Where the Pro is full glass, this one uses a glass blank with carbon reinforcement, which is a deliberate compromise: glass gives the shock absorption and the ability to bend a long way without failing, carbon adds stiffness and lets you feel what is happening on the end of the line. On a rod fished at 100 metres over a reef, that difference is the difference between knowing you have a bite and finding out later.

It is a two-piece, collapsing to 115 cm, which is genuinely useful – a one-piece big-game rod will not go in most cars and is a nuisance to store. The guides are Fuji, in a 4+1 configuration, and the grip is EVA in a full-wells shape, which is what you want when you are pulling against a heavy drag with a wet hand.

Rated to 50-80 lb line with a lure rating up to 750 g, it is built for deep-water work: heavy jigs, big live and dead baits, and drifting over structure. Off this coast that means dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, big grouper and jobfish over the offshore pinnacles, kingfish, and squid work at depth. At 663 g it is a little lighter than the full-glass rods in the range, which you notice by the end of a long day.

How is this different from the Big Game Pro?

The Pro is full glass and one piece. The Pro II uses a glass blank with carbon reinforcement, comes in two pieces that collapse to 115 cm, and uses Fuji guides. You gain sensitivity and portability; the full-glass rod remains the more forgiving under extreme sustained load.

Is 500-750 g really the lure rating?

That is the figure our supplier gives, and it is credible for a rod in this class - heavy deep jigs and big baits in strong current genuinely reach those weights. We have marked it as a supplier figure because we could not verify it against a Noeby specification sheet. Ask us if it matters to your purchase.

What reel should I use?

A 50 class conventional lever-drag reel with 50-80 lb line. For deep jigging specifically, a high-capacity jigging reel with a strong drag and a reliable retrieve under load.

Where would I use this around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the channel out to Mafia, around Latham Island and north towards Pemba. Yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and big grouper are all within its class. It is a boat rod - not something to cast from a beach.

Does the two-piece joint weaken it?

Not meaningfully on a rod built this way - the joint sits in the butt section where the blank is thickest. The benefit is real: a 115 cm rod fits in a car and stores easily, which a 1.68 m one-piece does not.

Why Fuji guides on a boat rod?

Because line under heavy drag generates heat and pressure at the guide ring, and Fuji's inserts handle both better than generic alternatives. On a rod that will see 15-20 kg of drag, it is a sensible place to spend money.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the whole rod with fresh water after every trip, getting water under the reel seat and into the gimbal rather than just over the blank. Dry it before storage, and store it flat or butt-down rather than leaning under its own tension.
