Product description

About this product

The CORE 40076 does something most torches do not: it reads the light around it and sets its own brightness. Flip the auto switch and the beam eases back in a dark room and opens up in a large space, which saves both battery and the business of cycling through modes.

Used manually it has two levels. One press gives 1,500 lumens on high for 2 hours; two presses give 125 lumens on low for 21 hours. A half press gives a momentary burst without turning the light fully on, which is the feature people use most often once they have it.

The lithium-ion battery is built in and not replaceable, charged through a micro-USB port under a sliding cover at the tail. The body is aluminium, rated IPX4 for rain, and impact resistant to a metre.

Questions

Good to know

How does auto-brightness work?

A sensor reads the light around the torch and sets the output to suit it. In a dark room it eases back so you are not dazzled; in a large open space it opens up. You can switch it off and use the two manual levels instead.

Can I change the battery?

No. CORE builds the lithium-ion cell in and recharges it through the micro-USB port. That is a deliberate design choice for sealing and reliability, and it means the torch has a finite life measured in charge cycles.

How far does the beam reach?

CORE does not publish a beam distance for this model and we will not invent one. At 1,500 lumens it lights a compound comfortably. Ask us and we will show you the beam against the other lights on the shelf.

Is it waterproof?

IPX4, which means rain and splashes. Do not submerge it, and keep the sliding charge port cover closed.

What is the half press for?

A momentary flash without switching the torch fully on. It is useful for checking something quickly at night without announcing yourself or losing your dark adaptation.

How long does it take to charge?

Several hours over micro-USB. A phone charger works; a very low-current plug will be slow.

How do I look after the battery?

Keep it out of a hot car, charge it every couple of months if it is sitting unused, and do not store it flat. Heat is what shortens a sealed lithium cell's life in this climate.

Can I fly with it?

The battery in this one is built in and cannot be removed, which actually makes flying simpler - there is no spare cell to declare. A device with an installed lithium battery may travel in either cabin or checked baggage, though the cabin is the safer choice and is what we would do. The strict rule, that spare loose cells and power banks must never go in checked luggage, does not apply here because there is nothing to take out.
