Product description

About this product

The number that matters on this lantern is not the 750 lumens. It is the 86 hours.

On its low setting the CORE 40077 puts out 30 lumens and runs for 86 hours – three and a half days of continuous light. Step up to medium and you get 68 lumens for 33 hours. Only when you want the full 750 lumens does the runtime drop to 5 hours. Most nights you will never leave low.

A press-and-hold on the switch dims it steplessly between the fixed levels, so you can set it exactly where you want rather than choosing between too dim and too bright.

Inside are two 18650 rechargeable cells feeding a Cree LED, and a USB output port on the side means the lantern doubles as a power bank for a phone, a head torch or a GPS. The charging cable stores in a compartment in the base so it does not get lost. A sturdy folding handle carries it or hangs it from a tent ridge.

Rated IPX4, so rain is fine. Built and finished to CORE’s own standard.

Questions

Good to know

Does it really run for 86 hours?

On the low setting, yes - that is CORE's own rated figure at 30 lumens. 30 lumens is enough to move around a tent and find your gear. For reading use medium at 68 lumens, which still gives 33 hours.

How bright is 750 lumens in practice?

Bright enough to light a whole campsite or a room during a power cut, throwing usable light about 11 m. You get 5 hours at that level, so use it when you need it rather than as the default.

Can it charge my phone?

Yes. There is a USB output port on the side. Bear in mind that charging a phone uses battery that would otherwise be light, so it is a useful backup rather than a primary power bank.

Can I leave it out in the rain?

IPX4 covers rain and splashes. Do not submerge it or leave it standing in water.

How does it compare to the 1250 lumen model?

The 1250 has a Bluetooth speaker and more peak output, but far less endurance - 19 hours on low against 86 here. If you want music, take the 1250. If you want a lantern that simply stays on, take this one.

How do I hang it?

The handle folds up into a hook that goes over a tent ridge loop, a branch or a carabiner. Folded down it sits flat for carrying or standing on a table.

Can I fly with the battery?

Spare lithium cells and power banks must travel in your cabin bag and are not allowed in checked luggage - that is a firm rule on every airline out of Julius Nyerere, not a preference. Protect the terminals so nothing can short against keys or coins: keep the cell in its case, in the original packaging, or tape the contacts. A cell installed in the light itself may go either way, though the cabin is still the safer choice. Capacity limits only bite above 100 Wh, and a 21700 or 18650 cell is nowhere near that - roughly 13 to 18 Wh - so no airline approval is needed.
