About this product

An LEP light is not a bright LED. It uses a laser to excite a phosphor, which produces an extremely small, extremely intense emitting surface, and that is what allows a 67 mm head to throw 2,900 metres at over two million candela. Nothing based on an LED comes close at this size.

The trade with LEP is that the beam is almost all spot and no spill, which makes a pure LEP light awkward to use nearby. The P40 solves that by adding five floodlight LEDs around the central lens, and an Adaptive Cruise Mode that changes brightness according to the angle the light is held at: pointed down at your feet it eases off, pointed out at the horizon it goes to full.

Total output is 2,000 lumens. A NITECORE NL2155HP 21700 cell of 5,500 mAh is supplied, fast charging over USB-C, with a tail power button and two level buttons.

Good to know

What is LEP and why does it reach so far?

A laser excites a phosphor to produce white light from a point far smaller than any LED. A small source focuses into a tighter beam, and a tighter beam travels further. That is the whole reason for the 2,900 metre figure.

Is it safe to look at?

It is a Class 1 device, meaning it is safe under normal use, but do not shine it at anyone's eyes, at aircraft or at vehicles. A beam this intense at close range is unpleasant, and pointing any light at an aircraft is an offence.

Will I see something at 2,900 metres?

You will see the beam land. Identifying an object that far out needs binoculars or a scope behind it. At a kilometre the light is genuinely useful with the naked eye.

Why are there floodlight LEDs as well?

Because a pure LEP beam is a spot with almost no spill, which is useless at arm's length. The five LEDs give you a normal, usable light for everything within a few metres.

What does Adaptive Cruise Mode do?

It reads the angle you are holding the light at and adjusts brightness, so pointing it at the ground does not dazzle you and lifting it to the horizon brings the output back.

Can I use it on the water?

It is IP68 to 2 metres, so spray and rain are fine. Rinse the salt off after a trip and dry the charging port before plugging in.

What filters fit it?

65 mm filters, the same as the P30i and MH40 series.
