Product description

About this product

Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The knife is half of it. The sheath is the other half.

What separates this from a plain fixed-blade is what Gerber built into the carry system. The sheath front holds a ferrocerium fire-starting rod, and the back of the blade has a striker notch machined into it. The sheath back holds a diamond sharpener. The lanyard has an emergency whistle in it. Land-to-air rescue signals are printed on the sheath itself.

The knife is full tang, 4.8 inches of drop-point blade in a fine plain edge — easier to sharpen in the field and better for controlled cutting than a serrated one. The butt is a cross-hatched stainless hammer pommel, for driving pegs and breaking glass.

The handle is textured rubber over the full tang, which keeps its grip wet, and there are lashing holes if you need to bind it to a pole.

Questions

Good to know

Why the plain edge rather than serrated?

Because you can sharpen it in the field. A serrated edge cuts rope and webbing slightly better when new, but once dull it needs specialist files to restore, and it is worse for every other camp job: food, carving, controlled cutting. For a knife you will own for years, plain edge is the more practical choice.

How does the fire starter work?

The ferro rod lives in the front of the sheath. Hold it against your tinder and scrape the striker notch on the back of the blade down it firmly. It throws sparks hot enough to light dry tinder, and unlike a lighter it works wet, cold and at altitude. Practise at home before you need it in the dark.

What steel is 7Cr17MoV, and is it any good?

A Chinese stainless roughly equivalent to 440A. It is not premium steel: it will not hold an edge like a high-carbon tool steel. What it does well is resist rust, which in coastal Tanzanian humidity is the more useful property, and it sharpens easily on the supplied sharpener. For a working camp knife that lives in a sheath in a humid climate, that trade is the right way round.

Is it legal to carry here?

Fixed-blade knives are tools, and carrying one at a campsite, on a boat or in a vehicle with your camping kit is ordinary use. Carrying a fixed blade about your person in town is a different matter and can attract attention from police. Keep it packed with your gear in transit, not on your belt in the city.

How do I look after it?

Dry it after every use and wipe the blade with a light oil, because coastal air rusts even stainless steel given time. Touch the edge up on the supplied sharpener regularly rather than waiting until it is blunt, since a few strokes often beats a long session. Keep the sheath dry, because a damp sheath holds moisture against the blade.

Is it legal to carry this knife in Tanzania?

A fixed-blade knife of this size is camping and outdoor equipment, not something to carry about town. Keep it in your vehicle or your camping kit and out of sight in public places, and use common sense about where it travels with you.
