About this product

The KMC X12 in Ti Gold – the finish KMC list as Ti Gold rather than simply gold, and the distinction is worth understanding.

The colour comes from titanium nitride, a surface treatment applied for hardness rather than for looks. Ti-N is the same coating used on drill bits and cutting tools; the warm gold tone is what the chemistry happens to produce. So the finish is not decoration over a standard chain – it is a harder outer surface, and the appearance is a side effect.

The compatibility point that matters most on any X12: KMC state explicitly that it is not compatible with SRAM T-Type Transmission, SRAM eTap AXS, or SRAM Flattop road chains, which use different roller and pin geometry. Confirmed compatible are SRAM Eagle and Campagnolo 12-speed, across MTB, road, gravel and cyclocross. KMC’s corporate site and their US store disagree on Shimano 12-speed, so we flag that rather than assert it.

Good to know

Is it actually gold?

No. The colour comes from titanium nitride, a hard surface coating used on cutting tools. It is applied for wear resistance and the gold tone is a by-product of the chemistry, not the purpose.

Does the Ti-N coating make the chain last longer?

It gives the outer surface a harder finish, which helps against abrasion. What actually determines chain life is how often you clean and lubricate it - in Tanzanian dust that matters far more than any coating.

Which 12-speed drivetrains does it NOT fit?

This is the important one. KMC state the X12 is not compatible with SRAM T-Type (Transmission), SRAM eTap AXS, or SRAM Flattop road chains. Those systems use different roller and pin geometry, and fitting an X12 to one is a safety problem rather than just a shifting one. If you run any SRAM AXS or Transmission groupset, this is not your chain.

Does it work with Shimano 12-speed?

KMC own two official sites and they do not agree on this - their corporate site lists Shimano among the compatible 12-speed systems, their US store does not. We would rather tell you that than guess. SRAM Eagle and Campagnolo 12-speed are confirmed by both. If you run Shimano 12-speed, talk to us before ordering and we will check with the supplier.

Do I need to shorten the chain?

Almost certainly. Chains are supplied over-length so they fit the widest range of bikes, and yours must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. You will need a chain tool. If you are not sure how many links to remove, bring the bike to us with the old chain and we will size it against it.

Is a quick link included?

KMC do not state on their own product pages that a connector is packed in the box, and they sell MissingLink connectors as separate items, so we do not claim one is included. Check the packet - and if it is not there, the matching KMC connector is CL555 for 11-speed and CL552 for 12-speed. Ask us and we will confirm before you ride.

How often should I replace a chain?

Measure it rather than guessing - a chain checker costs very little. Replace at around 0.5% stretch for a 11 or 12-speed drivetrain and 0.75% for wider chains. A worn chain left on will wear the cassette and chainrings to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one.
