About this product

The 105 PD-R7000 is Shimano’s mid-tier road pedal, and for most riders it is the sensible place to stop. The engineering differences between it and the Ultegra pedal above it are real but small; the difference between it and an entry-level pedal is immediately obvious underfoot.

The body is carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer with a stainless steel plate bonded to the contact face. That steel plate is what stops the platform flexing and wearing under a cleat, and it is the single biggest reason a good pedal keeps feeling precise after a few thousand kilometres while a cheap one goes vague.

The platform is extra wide for power transfer, the axle runs on low-maintenance sealed cartridge bearings, and entry and release spring tension is adjustable so you can set it soft while learning and firm it up later. 265 g the pair, and a set of SM-SH11 yellow cleats is included.

One thing not to look for: there are no axle length options for the PD-R7000. Shimano offer the multiple-axle-width programme on Dura-Ace and Ultegra pedals only. The R7000 comes in one standard 9/16 inch by 20 TPI spindle and that is the whole range.

Good to know

Are there longer axle options?

No. Shimano's extended-axle programme covers Dura-Ace PD-R9100 and Ultegra PD-R8000 only. The 105 PD-R7000 has a single standard 9/16 inch spindle length. Any listing offering a plus-4 mm R7000 is describing something that does not exist.

Are cleats included?

Yes - a set of SM-SH11 yellow cleats with 6 degrees of float, which is the right cleat for most riders. If you want the blue 2-degree or red fixed cleat instead, those are bought separately.

Will these fit my shoes and pedals?

These are SPD-SL road cleats. They bolt to a three-bolt road shoe and clip into SPD-SL road pedals only. They will not fit two-bolt SPD mountain bike shoes or SPD pedals, which is the commonest mistake people make ordering cleats. Check your shoe sole - three holes in a triangle means SPD-SL, two holes in a line means SPD.

What do I gain over an entry-level pedal?

Mainly the stainless steel body plate, which stops the platform wearing and going vague, and a stiffer, wider platform. At 265 g it is also around 45 g lighter than the PD-R550 - a real difference, though not one you feel.

Can I make clipping out easier?

Yes - on the pedal, not the cleat. Shimano SPD-SL pedals have an adjustable spring tension screw. Wind it to the softest setting while you are learning, then tighten it once clipping out is second nature.

How often do cleats need replacing?

When the walking pads are visibly worn down, when you can rock the shoe in the pedal, or when unclipping starts feeling unpredictable. Worn cleats release unexpectedly, which is how people fall at junctions. They are a cheap part - replace them before they become a problem.

Does dust affect them?

Fine dust and grit work into the pedal and cleat interface and speed up wear. Rinse the cleats and pedal bodies when you wash the bike and check the retaining bolts are tight - a cleat bolt backing out mid-ride is not a pleasant surprise.
