Highlights

Made for 8-speed

One chain across all three major derailleur systems.

The most common drivetrain here

8-speed is what most hardtails, hybrids and older MTBs in Tanzania actually run.

X-Bridge shifting

Chamfered inner and outer plates so the chain climbs sprockets cleanly under load.

Fits all three systems

KMC build the X-Series around Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo together.

Check your sprocket count

The wider 3/32 in roller suits 8-speed only - it will not fit 9-speed or narrower.

Product description

About this product

The KMC X8 is the 8-speed chain in KMC’s X-Series, and 8-speed is still the most common drivetrain on the road in Tanzania – it is what most hardtails, hybrids and older mountain bikes run, and parts for it are the easiest to find.

KMC design the X-Series around the characteristics of Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo systems together rather than copying one of them. The X-Bridge shaping – precisely chamfered plates on the inner and outer faces – is what lets the chain climb between sprockets cleanly under load, and it is the difference you feel when changing gear on a hill rather than on the flat.

One thing to be clear about: the X8 uses the wider 1/2 x 3/32 inch roller size. That is standard for 8-speed and below, and it is why an X8 will not work on a 9, 10, 11 or 12-speed cassette – the chain is simply too wide to sit between the more closely spaced sprockets. Count the sprockets on your cassette before ordering.

It comes at 116 links, which is longer than most bikes need. Size it to your drivetrain before fitting.

Questions

Good to know

How do I know how many speeds my bike has?

Count the sprockets on the rear cassette. That number is the speed count - eight sprockets means an 8-speed chain. The number of chainrings at the front does not change it. If in doubt send us a photo of the cassette.

Will an 8-speed chain fit my 9 or 10-speed bike?

No. The X8 uses the wider 3/32 inch roller size, which will not sit between the closer sprockets on a 9-speed cassette or narrower. Count the sprockets on the rear cassette and buy the matching chain.

Do I need to shorten the chain?

Almost certainly. Chains are supplied over-length so they fit the widest range of bikes, and yours must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. You will need a chain tool. If you are not sure how many links to remove, bring the bike to us with the old chain and we will size it against it.

Is a quick link included?

KMC do not state on their own product pages that a connector is packed in the box, and they sell MissingLink connectors as separate items, so we do not claim one is included. Check the packet - and if it is not there, the matching KMC connector is CL555 for 11-speed and CL552 for 12-speed. Ask us and we will confirm before you ride.

How often should I replace a chain?

Measure it rather than guessing - a chain checker costs very little. Replace at around 0.5% stretch for a 11 or 12-speed drivetrain and 0.75% for wider chains. A worn chain left on will wear the cassette and chainrings to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one.

Will it last in Tanzanian conditions?

Chain life here is set by cleaning, not by brand. Fine dust bound into chain lube becomes an abrasive paste, and that paste is what wears the rollers and pins. Clean and re-lube regularly and a chain lasts as it should; neglect it and no chain will.

How do I know it is genuine?

KMC publish a fake-chains page of their own because counterfeits are a real problem in this region. We buy through the proper supply chain rather than open marketplaces. A counterfeit chain can fail under load, which is not a risk worth taking on a component this cheap.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
