Highlights

Wood, not plastic

A wooden popper is denser and sits lower in the water, so the cup bites properly on every sweep instead of skipping over the surface. It is why the serious GT lures are still made of wood.

18 cm, 120 g

A full-size offshore popper with the weight to cast a long way into wind.

Wooden body

Denser than plastic, so it sits low and the cup face digs in rather than skating.

Reflective inner finish

An internal flash layer under the paint that catches light as the lure rolls.

Built for big fish

Tuna, GT and anything else that eats on the surface offshore.

Product description

About this product

Popper Fishing Lure – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

There is a reason the best big-game poppers are still carved from wood. Wood is denser than moulded plastic for the same shape, so a wooden popper sits lower in the water and the cup face bites properly on every sweep of the rod instead of skipping across the top. The extra mass also carries a cast further, which matters when you are trying to reach a bust-up before it goes down.

At 18 cm and 120 g this is a full offshore popper. It needs a proper popping outfit – a heavy 8 to 9 ft rod and a 14000 to 18000 size reel with PE 6 to PE 8 braid. It is not a lure to put on ordinary tackle.

The finish is a reflective inner layer under the paint, which catches light as the lure rolls and shows from below in a way a flat painted surface does not.

Off Dar es Salaam it belongs on the reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, over the Mafia channel and out towards Latham Island – GT, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, kingfish and big queenfish, worked hard at first light over a moving tide.

The supplier does not publish the hook and split-ring specification for this lure. On a popper this size that is the part worth checking before you fish it – ask us and we will look at what is fitted, and we stock heavy replacements.

Questions

Good to know

Why wood rather than plastic?

Wood is denser, so the lure sits lower in the water and the cup face digs in properly on every sweep instead of skating across the surface. It also casts further for the same size. Most serious big-game poppers are still wooden for exactly these reasons.

What tackle do I need?

A dedicated popping rod of 8 to 9 ft rated for 120 g, and a 14000 to 18000 size spinning reel with PE 6 to PE 8 braid and a heavy leader. Throwing this on lighter gear will not cast properly and risks breaking the rod.

How do I work a popper?

Rod tip low, a sharp downward sweep so the cup digs and spits water, then wind up the slack and repeat. Vary the rhythm and leave occasional long pauses - a popper sitting still after a big splash is often what gets eaten.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

GT, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, kingfish and big queenfish, on the reef edges, pinnacles and drop-offs, over the Mafia channel and out towards Latham Island. First light over a tide change is the window.

Should I check the hooks before fishing it?

Yes, and on this lure particularly, because the supplier does not publish what is fitted. Hooks and split rings are the cheapest part of a popping outfit and the part that fails. Ask us and we will look at what is on it and fit heavier if needed.

Will it get damaged?

Wooden poppers take teeth marks and eventually chip, which is normal and does not affect how they fish as long as the finish stays sealed. If a chip goes through to bare wood, seal it with clear epoxy or nail varnish before the wood soaks up water.

Popper or stickbait?

A popper makes noise and calls fish up, best in calm to moderate water over structure. A stickbait is subtler, often better in rough water or on fish that have seen lures. Serious popping anglers carry both.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water and dry it before it goes back in the bag, hooks especially. Check the through-wire and split rings after every fish; check the finish for chips through to the wood.
