If you could take one lure type fishing, it would be a soft plastic worm on a jig head. Every predatory fish in fresh or salt water eats something long and wriggling, and a soft worm is the cheapest way to show them one. It costs very little to lose, which means you can fish it in the snaggy places where fish actually live.
The bodies here are soft silicone with moulded 3D eyes, in eleven colours. Silicone is flexible enough that the tail works at a crawl, which matters – much of the time the retrieve that catches is slower than feels right.
Rig one on a jig head by pushing the point in at the nose, threading it along the body and bringing it out through the back, so the bait sits straight against the head collar. A crooked bait spins and twists your line. Then cast, count it down, and retrieve with lifts and drops of the rod tip. Most takes come on the drop.
Around Dar es Salaam they take queenfish, snapper, barracuda, small trevally and grouper from jetties, creek mouths, rocks and a small boat. Inland they catch tilapia, catfish, bass, tigerfish and Nile perch.
