Squid fishing is a night pursuit and a fussy one. Squid hunt by sight, they come and go around light, and what they will take on one night they ignore on the next. Buying a set of five jigs rather than one is not padding – it is how you find the size and colour that works before the tide turns.
Each jig has the standard squid design: a prawn-shaped body with 3D eyes, and a crown of fine barbs pointing upward and backward around the tail instead of a hook. Squid have no jaw to hook, so the barbs slide into the tentacles as the squid wraps itself around the lure and hold it while you lift. The bodies are luminous – a few seconds under a torch and they glow for minutes underwater.
The technique is unhurried. Cast, let the jig sink, then two or three sharp upward flicks of the rod and let it settle back on a slack line. Squid take on the drop and the bite feels like nothing more than sudden weight. Lift steadily – never strike, because tentacles tear.
Around Dar es Salaam, squid come in around jetty and boat lights on calm dark nights, and along the reef edges. Reef fish will take the same jigs on the drop.
