Highlights

The one you leave in the car

Some balls are looked after. This is the other kind - a rubber ball for the court by the house, the school playground and the dusty half-court, where it will be bounced on grit, left in the sun and thrown at a rim with no net. It is built to take that.

Rubber cover

Wilson build this one for outdoor surfaces: concrete, tarmac, dirt and synthetic courts.

Super wide grooves

Extra-deep channels between panels, which is where your fingers get their purchase on the ball.

Air-locking chamber

A snap-closure valve chamber that holds pressure longer between pump-ups.

Size 7, 29.5 in

The full men-s and adult size, high school upwards.

Product description

About this product

Wilson Mvp Basketball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The MVP is Wilson-s straightforward rubber outdoor basketball, and it is the right ball for most of the basketball actually played in Tanzania.

Wilson position it for outdoor courts – granulated surfaces, concrete, dirt and synthetic. That is not a euphemism for cheap. Outdoor and indoor balls are genuinely different products: an indoor composite ball has a soft, tacky cover tuned for a clean wooden floor and dry hands, and it is destroyed by concrete. A rubber ball is tougher, grippier when dusty, and does not care about the surface. On a school or community court, rubber is not a compromise – it is the correct choice.

The grip comes from the grooves. Wilson make them unusually wide and deep on this ball, and that is what your fingertips catch when you palm it or control it one-handed. Combined with the natural texture of rubber, it holds better in a sweaty hand than a smooth-panelled ball does.

One point of clarification: this ball is often sold as the MVP 295, and 295 is not a model number. It means 29.5 inches – the size 7 circumference. There is no separate MVP 295 specification to look for.

The air-locking chamber at the valve holds pressure better than a plain valve does. Every ball leaks eventually; a good valve is the difference between topping it up monthly and topping it up weekly.

Questions

Good to know

Does the 295 in the name mean anything?

Yes - it is 29.5 inches, the size 7 circumference. It is not a model number and there is no separate MVP 295 specification. Wilson use the same convention across the range.

Will an outdoor ball last on a tarmac court?

Longer than any indoor ball, which is the point. A rubber cover is built to be dragged across concrete and tarmac; a composite or leather indoor ball is destroyed by the same surface in weeks. If your court is outdoors, buy a rubber ball and nothing else.

What basketball size do I need?

Size 7 (29.5 in) is the mens and adult ball. Size 6 (28.5 in) is the womens ball and suits youth from about 12. Size 5 (27.5 in) is the youth ball, roughly ages 8 to 11, and is what FIBA specify for mini-basketball. Sizes 4 and 3 are childrens balls and are not FIBA sizes at all.

Why are the grooves so wide?

Because that is where grip comes from. Your fingertips catch in the channels between panels rather than on the panel surface. Wider, deeper grooves mean a more secure hold, especially with a sweaty hand or a dusty ball.

How hard should a basketball be inflated?

Drop it from shoulder height onto a hard floor - a correctly inflated ball bounces back to about hip height. Check it every few weeks. Most balls that feel dead are simply soft, and playing on a soft ball is how you learn a bad shooting touch.

Is it good enough for a league?

For recreational and school leagues on outdoor courts, yes. For indoor competition where a composite or leather ball is specified, no - a rubber ball behaves differently on a wooden floor and is usually not permitted.

How should I look after a ball in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not playing, and out of a hot car. Heat raises the internal pressure and ages the cover and the bladder. Wipe the dust off after playing outdoors - grit ground into the surface is what wears the grip channels smooth.
