Highlights

The ball you buy six of

A school or a community court does not need one expensive ball. It needs six that survive being kicked, left in the rain and bounced on grit - and that nobody is heartbroken about when one goes over a wall. That is the job this ball does.

Size 7, 29.5 in

Full regulation adult size, so players are learning on the right ball.

PVC cover

Tough, cheap and unbothered by concrete, tarmac and dust.

Good for multiples

Priced so a school or club can buy a set rather than one ball.

Indoor and outdoor

Playable on both, and built for the rough surface rather than the smooth one.

Product description

About this product

This is a PVC size 7 basketball – full regulation adult size, built for hard outdoor courts, and priced so you can buy several.

That last point is the real argument. A school, a youth programme, a community court or a compound with several players does not benefit from one premium ball; it benefits from enough balls that everyone can practise at once. At this price a set of six costs less than a single composite-leather indoor ball, and on a concrete court the expensive ball would not last the term anyway.

PVC is a tough synthetic cover. It is harder and less tacky in the hand than rubber or composite leather, which is a genuine difference you can feel – a serious player will notice it immediately. What it is very good at is surviving. It shrugs off concrete, dust and rain, and it does not soften or peel the way a cheap composite cover does.

Size 7 at 29.5 inches is the correct size for adults and high-school-age players, which matters: learning on a ball that is too large or too small teaches the wrong shooting form.

Keep it inflated properly. A soft ball is the commonest problem with school and community balls and it teaches a bad shooting touch. Drop it from shoulder height – it should bounce back to about hip height.

Questions

Good to know

What basketball size do I need?

Size 7 (29.5 in) is the mens and adult ball. Size 6 (28.5 in) is the womens ball and suits youth from about 12. Size 5 (27.5 in) is the youth ball, roughly ages 8 to 11, and is what FIBA specify for mini-basketball. Sizes 4 and 3 are childrens balls and are not FIBA sizes at all.

How does PVC compare with rubber or composite leather?

PVC is the toughest and the cheapest, and the hardest in the hand. Rubber is the usual outdoor choice - grippier and softer-feeling. Composite leather is for indoor courts and is destroyed quickly outdoors. For durability per shilling, PVC wins.

Is it good enough for matches?

For school and recreational matches, yes. For a league that specifies a ball, no - competition rules usually name a ball type and a PVC practice ball will not qualify.

How hard should a basketball be inflated?

Drop it from shoulder height onto a hard floor - a correctly inflated ball bounces back to about hip height. Check it every few weeks. Most balls that feel dead are simply soft, and playing on a soft ball is how you learn a bad shooting touch.

Why buy this rather than a Wilson or a Molten?

Because you need several. If you are buying one ball for yourself, spend more and get a rubber Wilson - it feels better and lasts. If you are equipping a school or a court, this is the ball that lets you buy enough of them.

Will an outdoor ball last on a tarmac court?

Longer than any indoor ball, which is the point. A rubber cover is built to be dragged across concrete and tarmac; a composite or leather indoor ball is destroyed by the same surface in weeks. If your court is outdoors, buy a rubber ball and nothing else.

How should I look after a ball in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not playing, and out of a hot car. Heat raises the internal pressure and ages the cover and the bladder. Wipe the dust off after playing outdoors - grit ground into the surface is what wears the grip channels smooth.
