About this product

An aerosol chain cleaner that uses advanced solvents to break down oil and grease quickly – the fast option when a chain is genuinely filthy rather than merely dusty.

The advantage of an aerosol here is pressure. The spray drives cleaner into the gap between the roller and the side plates, which is where the abrasive mix of old lube and fine dust actually lives. A brush and a bucket clean the outside of a chain; an aerosol reaches inside it.

Muc-Off recommend pairing it with a chain cleaning device, and that combination is genuinely quicker than doing it by hand. Spray, run the chain through, rinse with water, dry it thoroughly, then lubricate. The drying step is not optional – a chain left wet on the coast starts to show surface rust within a day.

Keep it off disc rotors and pads. It is a solvent cleaner doing exactly what a solvent cleaner does, and a contaminated pad usually ends up being replaced rather than cleaned.

Good to know

When would I use this instead of a bike cleaner?

When the chain is properly dirty - black, gritty, and audible. A general bike cleaner will handle surface dust; this is for the oily build-up that has bonded inside the links.

Do I need to rinse it off?

Yes. Rinse with clean water, then dry the chain thoroughly before lubricating. Lube applied over solvent residue and moisture will not stick properly.

Will it harm my disc brakes?

Keep any oil, lube or polish off the rotors and pads. If a lube or spray reaches a rotor the brake will squeal and lose power, and a contaminated pad usually has to be replaced. Cover or shield the rotors when you spray, and wipe rotors with a dedicated disc brake cleaner if anything lands on them.

Can I use it with a chain cleaning machine?

Yes, and Muc-Off recommend it. The machine plus the aerosol is considerably faster than cleaning a chain by hand, and it contains the mess.

Why does drying the bike matter so much here?

Because of the salt and the humidity. Water left standing in bolt heads, on the chain and around the cassette starts corrosion quickly on the coast. Dry the bike, then lubricate - ten minutes that adds years to a drivetrain.

What do I do with the dirty water?

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.

How should I store it in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and away from a hot car boot. Aerosols and solvent-based products do not enjoy sitting at 40 degrees C, and a cupboard indoors is fine. Close the cap properly - humidity on the coast gets into anything left open.
