About this product

Nano Tech Bike Cleaner is the product Muc-Off built the company on, and it is the one to own if you own only one. This is the 1 litre bottle with the trigger cap fitted, so it is ready to spray straight out of the box.

The formula works by breaking dirt down at a microscopic level rather than by being aggressive. That is what lets Muc-Off state it is safe on every surface on a bike – carbon fibre, anodised metal, paint, decals, seals, cables – and, importantly for anyone on discs, that it is rotor and pad friendly. It is alkaline based and free from acids, CFCs and solvents, and the contents are biodegradable.

Method matters. Rinse the loose dirt off first, spray the cleaner onto a wet bike, leave it three to five minutes to do its work, agitate the stubborn areas with a brush, then rinse. Do not let it dry on the frame – in Dar sun that happens fast, so wash in shade or early morning.

If you go through a lot of it, the Bike Cleaner Concentrate makes up to four litres from one and costs less per wash.

Good to know

What is the right order to wash a bike?

Rinse the worst off with low pressure, degrease and clean the drivetrain first so its grime does not run over clean paint, then wash the frame and wheels, rinse, dry, and lubricate the chain last. Doing the chain first and the frame second is the single commonest mistake.

Is it safe on carbon and paintwork?

Muc-Off formulate their bike cleaners to be safe on carbon fibre, anodised metal, decals and paint, and free of acids and solvents. Rinse it off rather than letting it dry on the surface in direct sun.

Does the heat here change how I should use it?

Yes. Wash in shade or early morning. In full Dar sun a cleaner dries on the frame before you can rinse it, which leaves streaks and stops it working. Keep the surface wet while the product does its job.

Is it safe on disc brakes?

Muc-Off state it is disc rotor and pad friendly, which is unusual - many degreasers are not. Even so, rinse rotors thoroughly afterwards and never let a lube or polish near them.

Can I use a pressure washer?

Only on a low setting and never aimed at a hub, bottom bracket, headset or suspension seal - high pressure drives water and grit straight past the seals and into the bearings. A bucket, a brush and a hose do a better job with none of the risk.

Is there a cheaper way to buy it?

Yes. The 1 litre Bike Cleaner Concentrate makes up to four litres of cleaner, uses far less packaging and works out considerably cheaper per wash. Keep one ready-to-use trigger bottle and refill it.

What do I do with the dirty water?

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.
