About this product

The 50 ml bottle of Muc-Off C3 Dry Weather Ceramic Lube – the sensible size to start with if you have not run a ceramic lube before, and plenty for one bike over a long stretch of dry-season riding.

C3 carries nano ceramic particles suspended in synthetic polymers. Those particles sit between the roller and the pin inside each link and keep the metal surfaces apart, which is what a plain chain oil cannot do for long. Muc-Off claim up to ten times the performance of a conventional chain oil – their figure, not an independent one, but the practical effect riders report is a chain that stays quiet noticeably longer between applications.

Muc-Off list it for dry, dusty and damp conditions, a wider window than an ordinary dry lube and a good match for riding around Dar es Salaam outside the rains. The formula is biodegradable.

Is this the right choice for Tanzanian conditions?

For most of the year around Dar es Salaam you are riding in heat and fine dust, which is dry-lube territory - a dry or wax lube leaves a drier film that dust does not stick to. Switch to a wet lube through the long rains in March to May and the short rains in November and December, when washing off matters more than staying clean.

Is 50 ml enough?

For one bike, comfortably. An application uses only a few millilitres, so this bottle covers many months of regular riding. Move up to the 120 ml if you maintain several bikes.

How do I apply it properly?

On a clean, dry chain: one drop per link, back-pedal a few turns to work it into the rollers, leave it to settle, then wipe the outside of the chain with a rag. Lube left on the outer plates does nothing except collect dust.

Do I need to degrease the chain first?

Yes, and it matters more than which lube you pick. Fresh lube laid over old lube and grit just seals the grit inside the links. Degrease, rinse, let it dry fully, then lubricate.

Should I let it dry before riding?

Yes. Apply the evening before if you can - the polymers need time to set into a film, and riding straight away flings a good part of it off.

How should I store it in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and away from a hot car boot. Aerosols and solvent-based products do not enjoy sitting at 40 degrees C, and a cupboard indoors is fine. Close the cap properly - humidity on the coast gets into anything left open.
