Rinse the worst off with low pressure, degrease and clean the drivetrain first so its grime does not run over clean paint, then wash the frame and wheels, rinse, dry, and lubricate the chain last. Doing the chain first and the frame second is the single commonest mistake.

Yes. A brush alone will move loose dust but not the oily grime bound into a cassette. Spray a drivetrain cleaner or degreaser, let it work for about thirty seconds, then agitate with the brush and rinse.

Rinse it thoroughly after each use so old degreaser and grit do not set in the bristles, and avoid boiling water and hot components - heat distorts the bristles permanently.

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.
