Highlights

Hooks in the jaw, not the throat

A circle hook cannot easily catch soft tissue. As the fish turns away it slides out of the throat and locks in the hinge of the jaw - which is why serious bait anglers use nothing else.

Black nickel

Mustad own black nickel, which they rate at four times the rust resistance of conventional black nickel.

Opti-Angle UltraPoint

Sharpened so less metal is removed, so the point stays sharp rather than rolling over.

Nor-Tempered steel

Mustad Norwegian three-stage heat treatment, which they state adds up to 30 per cent strength.

Made in every strength

The Demon family runs from 1X Fine to 4X Strong, inline and offset, from size 6 to 12/0.

About this product

Demon Circle Black Hooks – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A circle hook works on a principle that takes some getting used to. The point is turned sharply inward toward the shank, so the gap is almost closed and the point cannot easily grab soft tissue. When a fish takes a bait and turns away, the hook is drawn out of the throat, and at the last moment the point catches in the hinge of the jaw and locks there. The fish is hooked in the one place that is both hard and easily released.

That is why circle hooks are the standard for live-bait fishing, for rods left in holders, and for anything you intend to release. It is also why you must not strike. Let the fish load the rod, then wind steadily and lift.

The Demon range is Mustad circle family, and black nickel is its standard finish – Mustad rate their own black nickel at four times the rust resistance of the ordinary kind. All Demon hooks carry the Opti-Angle needle point with 4.3 UltraPoint and are Nor-Tempered.

Mustad build the range across the full spread of strengths and geometries: 1X Fine inline for light live bait, 1X and 2X Strong for general use, and 3X and 4X Strong offset for heavy offshore work, in sizes from 6 to 12/0. Off Dar es Salaam that covers everything from snapper and grouper on the reef to sailfish, marlin and tuna offshore.

Questions

Good to know

How do I set a circle hook?

You do not strike. Let the fish take the bait and turn away, let the rod load, then wind steadily and lift. Striking pulls the hook straight out of the mouth. This takes discipline and it is the single commonest mistake people make with circle hooks.

Why use a circle hook at all?

Because the point is turned back toward the shank, so it cannot easily grab soft tissue. As the fish turns away the hook slides out of the throat and catches in the hinge of the jaw. Far fewer fish are gut-hooked, which matters if you release them and matters if you want your bait back.

Inline or offset - which should I buy?

Inline (non-offset) if you release fish: the point sits in the same plane as the shank and almost never catches soft tissue. Offset hooks are bent slightly out of plane, which lifts the hook-up rate a little but gut-hooks noticeably more fish. Many release fisheries worldwide permit inline circles only.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so it is sharper and stays sharp instead of rolling over on the first piece of coral. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint - a point length 4.3 times the wire diameter.

What does Nor-Tempered mean?

Mustad three-stage computer-controlled heat treatment, done in Norway. It gives the steel a fine-grained microstructure, which Mustad state increases hook strength by up to 30 per cent over conventional tempering.

Which pattern and size will I get?

Our supplier does not publish which Demon pattern this listing carries. Tell us what you are fishing for and we will check the packs on the shelf and tell you the pattern number, wire strength and size before you order.

What will I use it for around Dar es Salaam?

Live and dead bait for snapper, grouper and emperor over reef; kingfish, GT and cobia inshore; and sailfish, marlin and tuna offshore on the heavier patterns.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse used hooks in fresh water and dry them before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Keep them in a sealed box rather than an open tray, and throw away any hook whose point will not catch on a thumbnail.
