Product description

About this product

The bag you can put in the washing machine. Most sleeping bags need specialist cleaning, which is why so many of them go years without a wash – this one has a 210T polyester pongee shell and a washed-cotton lining built to come out of a domestic machine unchanged.

The M400 is the warmest of the series, with 400 g/m2 of hollow-fibre fill and an EN comfort rating of about 1 °C. It is cut as a hooded envelope, 30 cm longer at the head than the body length, so the hood is part of the bag rather than an add-on, and the zip opens fully so it lies flat as a quilt.

Questions

Good to know

Where in Tanzania do I actually need a 1 °C bag?

Ngorongoro crater rim, the Southern Highlands around Mbeya and Njombe in June and July, Kilimanjaro and Meru camps, and high-altitude nights generally. On the coast and in the low-lying parks it will be far too warm - use it open as a quilt, or take the LW180 instead.

How do I wash it?

Cold or 30 °C, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no fabric softener and no bleach. Dry it fully - a large synthetic bag takes longer than you expect - and store it loose rather than compressed.

What is the difference between M180, M300, M320 and M400?

Fill weight, and therefore warmth and total weight. The series runs from a 12 °C comfort rating at the light end down to about 1 °C for this M400, with weights from 1.2 kg to 1.85 kg. This listing is the M400.

Is 1.85 kg heavy?

For carrying on your back, yes. This is a car-camping and base-camp bag. For hiking, the LW180 at 680 g is the one to take.

Why synthetic rather than down?

In a humid climate synthetic wins. Hollow-fibre fill keeps insulating when it picks up damp, where down loses loft and stops working until it dries out completely.

Does the hood have a drawcord?

Yes - the hood is sewn as part of the bag and pulls in around your head, which is where most heat is lost.
