About this product

Most portable charcoal grills ask you to squat. This Naturehike rack is built the other way around – it opens to 84 cm tall, which puts the grate at roughly the height of a kitchen counter, so you can turn meat, drink a beer and talk to people without spending the evening bent double over the coals.

The frame is cold-rolled steel with a stainless steel grate measuring 64 x 24 cm. That long, narrow shape is deliberate: it takes skewers and ribs laid across it end to end, and it gives you a hot zone and a cooler zone along the length so meat can finish away from the fiercest coals. The height is adjustable, so you can drop the grate down for a quick sear or raise it to cook something through slowly.

Underneath sits a detachable enamelled ash catcher. Enamel is the practical choice here – it wipes clean where bare steel discolours and rusts, and because the tray lifts out, cleaning up means carrying a tray to the bin instead of tipping the whole grill over. There is a tool holder on the frame for tongs and a spatula, which sounds like a small thing until you have put hot tongs down on a camp table.

Folded it is 65 x 34 x 9 cm and around 6.7 kg, flat enough to travel down the side of a boot or behind a seat. It suits vehicle-based camping in Mikumi or Ruaha, a beach braai at Bagamoyo or Kigamboni, and just as easily a small terrace in Dar es Salaam where a permanent braai would not fit. It burns charcoal, which is what most people in Tanzania already have to hand.

Good to know

Does it burn charcoal or gas?

Charcoal. It is built around an enamelled charcoal basin, so the mkaa you already buy is exactly what it runs on. There is no gas version of this grill.

How many people does the grate feed?

The 64 x 24 cm grate handles nyama choma for a group of roughly four to six at a time. For a larger gathering you cook in batches, using the cooler end of the grate to hold finished meat warm.

Is it stable on sand or soft ground?

On firm ground it stands well. On loose beach sand at Kigamboni or Bagamoyo, press the feet down until they bed in, or set it on a board - as with any standing grill, do not leave it unattended on a slope.

How do I clean it after a braai?

Let the coals burn out, then lift out the enamelled ash tray and empty it. Brush the stainless grate while it is still warm. The enamel wipes clean with a damp cloth rather than needing to be scrubbed.

Will it rust in coastal humidity?

The stainless grate and the enamelled tray hold up well. The cold-rolled steel frame is painted, so keep it dry between trips and touch up any chips rather than leaving bare steel exposed to sea air.

Does it fit in a normal car?

Folded it is 65 x 34 cm and only 9 cm thick, so it lies flat in the boot of a saloon car as well as a Land Cruiser. At about 6.7 kg one person can carry it.

Can I use it on a balcony or terrace in Dar es Salaam?

Many people do, since it takes up almost no space when folded. Use it in the open air with clearance above and around it, never in an enclosed room or under a low ceiling - charcoal produces carbon monoxide.

Which colour will I receive?

It is made in black and khaki. Stock varies, so message us and we will tell you which colour is on the shelf in Dar es Salaam before you order.
