Highlights

Seven-three, medium-heavy

A little longer than a standard 7 ft rod and a step up in power - the combination that handles bigger lures and fish without becoming a surf rod.

7 ft 3 in (2.21 m), 2-piece

Three inches of extra length over a standard rod, for a bit more casting reach and lure control.

Medium-heavy power

Backbone for larger plastics, metal and mid-size poppers, and for turning a fish near structure.

Spinning configuration

Set up for a fixed-spool reel - the easier option in wind and for longer casts with light lures.

Toray carbon

CRONY builds on Japanese Toray carbon fibre across its rod range.

Product description

About this product

Crony Progress Fishing Rod – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Seven foot three is a deliberate length. A 7 ft rod is the default for lure fishing; going to 7 ft 3 in buys you a little more casting reach and a little more control over a lure at distance, without moving into the territory where the rod becomes tiring to hold all day. Paired with medium-heavy power, it handles bigger soft plastics, metal slices and mid-sized surface lures, and has enough spine to stop a fish that runs for structure.

It is a spinning model, which is the practical choice for most people fishing here: a fixed-spool reel handles wind better than a baitcaster, casts light lures further, and is far more forgiving when someone else picks up your rod.

Two honest notes. First, CRONY publishes its specification tables as images rather than text, and we found no published lure rating, line rating, guide specification or rod weight for this exact code. We have listed only what we can decode or source. Second, this rod is sold in some markets as part of the Progress series, but the code MCS reads as Master Collection Spinning in CRONY’s own naming system – Progress rods use PRS and PRC. We have queried this with the supplier; in the meantime we have listed it under its code rather than under a series name we cannot confirm.

Ask us before you buy and we will weigh and measure the rod in the shop and tell you what it casts comfortably.

Questions

Good to know

What does the model number mean?

CRONY codes read: series and reel type, then generation, then length in feet and inches, then piece count, then power. MCS5-732MH decodes as spinning, 5th generation, 7 ft 3 in, 2 pieces, medium-heavy. The MCS prefix is normally Master Collection Spinning - see the note in the specifications about the series name.

Is it a Progress rod or a Master Collection rod?

We cannot confirm which, and we would rather say so. CRONY's own code system says MCS = Master Collection Spinning, while some dealers list this rod as Progress. We have asked the supplier. Either way the rod itself is the same object; only the series label is in question.

What reel size should I use?

A 3000 to 4000 size saltwater spinning reel suits a 7 ft 3 in medium-heavy rod, with 15-30 lb braid. Larger and the rod starts to feel butt-heavy.

What can I catch with it around Dar es Salaam?

Queenfish, barracuda, small to mid-size trevally, snapper and kingfish from a boat, a jetty or the rocks. It is a general-purpose inshore lure rod rather than a specialist.

Why is the lure rating missing?

Because CRONY has not published one for this code and we will not invent it or borrow it from another rod. Ask us and we will tell you what the rod actually loads with.

Is CRONY a Japanese brand?

No - CRONY is Weihai CRONY Fishing Tackle Co., Ltd, based in Shandong, China. The Japanese part is the componentry: Toray carbon blanks and, across much of the range, Fuji guides and reel seats. We would rather be accurate than repeat a marketing line.

How should I look after it on this coast?

Rinse the blank, guides and reel seat with fresh water after every session and dry it before it goes into a bag or tube. Salt left in a reel-seat thread is what seizes it. Check guide inserts for chips - a chipped ring cuts braid under load.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide. A two-piece rod travels in a tube - tell us where you are and we will quote.
