About this product

The Aggress IV is CRONY’s saltwater lure and shore-casting series, and the AGS4-802MH is the model most people in Dar es Salaam end up with. Eight feet and medium-heavy is the shape of rod that covers the majority of what you can reach from land here: casting metal off the rocks at Msasani, working poppers along the reef edge at low tide, or standing on a beach at dawn throwing slices at whatever is pushing bait.

The 15-40 g rating is the number to pay attention to. It covers the 20-30 g metal slices that do most of the damage on this coast, small to medium poppers and stickbaits, and 4-6 in soft plastics on a jig head. Below 15 g the blank is too stiff to load properly; above 40 g you are shortening the rod’s life for the sake of one more cast.

Blank material is Toray carbon, which is the Japanese fibre supplier CRONY uses across the Aggress line. It is a two-piece rod, so it breaks down to just over four feet and travels in a car or a rod tube without difficulty.

Decoding the model number is useful once you know the system: AGS = Aggress Spinning, 4 = fourth generation, 80 = 8 ft 0 in, 2 = two pieces, MH = medium-heavy. The same logic reads every rod in the range.

What can I catch with this rod around Dar es Salaam?

It is a good match for kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally to a moderate size, and snapper off the rocks and beaches. Off a boat inshore it handles small tuna and bonito. For large GT or offshore popping you want a dedicated heavy popping rod - we stock those.

What reel size should I put on it?

A 4000 to 5000 size saltwater spinning reel balances an 8 ft MH rod well. Go to 6000 if you fish heavier braid and larger lures; anything bigger makes the rod feel butt-heavy.

What does the model number mean?

AGS = Aggress Spinning, 4 = fourth generation of the series, 80 = 8 ft 0 in, 2 = two-piece, MH = medium-heavy. The same code system runs across the CRONY range, so once you know it you can read any of their rods.

Is CRONY a Japanese brand?

No - CRONY is Weihai CRONY Fishing Tackle Co., Ltd, based in Shandong, China. What is Japanese is the componentry: Toray carbon in the blanks and, on much of the range, Fuji guides and reel seats. We would rather be accurate about that than repeat a marketing line.

Why are the guides, reel seat and rod weight not listed?

Can I use it for light jigging?

For light vertical jigging from a boat, within the 15-40 g range, yes. For proper jigging with heavier metal you want a dedicated jigging blank - the CRONY Amazing series we stock is built for exactly that.

How should I look after it on this coast?

Rinse the rod and especially the guide frames and reel seat with fresh water after every session, then dry it before it goes in a bag. Salt left in a reel seat thread is what seizes them. Never store a wet rod in a closed tube.
