About this product

Seven feet in four pieces is the travel-rod format that actually works. Two-piece rods are always awkward to carry; six-piece rods start to feel like a collection of short sticks. Four sections at 2.13 m collapses to around 56 cm – short enough for a daypack – while keeping enough blank in each section that the rod still bends as one curve.

The K4 is Noeby’s Leisure travel series, which is their value tier rather than their flagship. What it does spend money on is the right things: a carbon blank, 7+1 SiC guide rings, and a split EVA grip. SiC is the hardest and slickest of the common ring materials, which matters most with braided line on a light rod – soft rings groove, and a grooved ring cuts braid.

This is the casting model, built for a baitcaster with the guides on top. Rated 7-28 g of lure and 8-20 lb of line, it covers the useful everyday range: small poppers and stickbaits, spoons, spinners, crankbaits and 3-5 in soft plastics. On this coast that is jetty, creek and mangrove-edge fishing for queenfish, barracuda, small trevally and snapper; inland it is a Nile perch, tigerfish and bass rod.

A spinning version, the S704, is available in the same length and rating if you prefer a fixed-spool reel.

Good to know

Should I buy the casting or the spinning version?

Casting (this one, C704) if you already use a baitcaster and want accuracy with 10-28 g lures. Spinning (S704) if you fish in wind, throw lighter lures, or want the more forgiving option. Same length, same rating, same blank.

Where can I use it around Dar es Salaam?

It is a light rod, so inshore and freshwater: jetties, creeks and mangrove edges for barracuda, queenfish, small trevally and snapper, and the lakes and dams inland for Nile perch, tigerfish and bass. It is not built for offshore or heavy shore work.

What reel size suits it?

A compact low-profile baitcaster in the 100-150 size class, with 10-20 lb braid or 8-14 lb mono. Anything larger unbalances a 148 g rod.

Is a four-piece rod as good as a two-piece?

On a light rod like this, the difference is small and the convenience is large. You will feel a slight stiffening at the joints compared with a one-piece blank; you will not notice it while fishing 20 g lures.

What does SiC mean and does it matter?

Silicon carbide - the ring material inside the guide frame. It is the hardest and slickest in common use, so it sheds heat and resists grooving. With braided line that matters, because a grooved ring will cut braid at the worst moment.

How is this different from the Beast Travel Edition you sell?

The Beast is Noeby's premium travel line - Torayca carbon, Fuji guides and a Fuji reel seat, five pieces, rated to 55 g and 9 kg of drag. The K4 is the value tier: lighter ratings, in-house components, and a much lower price. Both are proper rods; they are aimed at different fish.

How do I look after a four-piece rod?

Rinse it in fresh water after every session, ferrules included, and dry it before it goes back in the tube. Grit and salt in a joint is what makes sections stick or split. Push the joints together firmly with a slight twist when assembling, and pull them apart straight - never twist them apart.
