Highlights

A tandem you can actually lift

At 30 kg this is around 20 kg lighter than most 3.2 m tandems, which is the difference between two people loading it onto a roof rack and giving up on the idea.

3.2 m x 82 cm

Long enough to track straight with two aboard, narrow enough to paddle efficiently.

30 kg hull

Light for its length - two people load it onto a roof rack without a struggle (supplier figure).

UV-stabilised polyethylene

Rotomoulded LLDPE in one piece, with UV inhibitor in the material rather than a coating on top.

Self-draining deck

Scupper holes clear water that washes aboard, so the boat never needs bailing.

Product description

About this product

Tandem kayaks usually come with a catch: the boat is excellent on the water and awful on land, because 3.2 metres of polyethylene normally weighs close to 50 kg. This hull is listed at 30 kg, which changes the calculation – two people can lift it onto a roof rack, and one strong adult can move it a short distance with a trolley.

On the water, 3.2 m and 82 cm is a sensible tandem shape. The length gives it enough waterline to hold a straight course with two people paddling out of time, which is what actually happens; the relatively narrow 82 cm beam keeps it efficient rather than making it a barge. It is a fishing-oriented sit-on-top, so the deck is moulded with seat wells, footwell positions for different leg lengths, recesses for tackle and grab handles at bow, stern and sides.

The hull is rotomoulded LLDPE polyethylene, formed as a single piece. The UV inhibitor is mixed into the plastic rather than applied as a surface coat, which is the right approach for a boat that lives near the equator – there is no coating to chalk off. Scratches from beaching it are cosmetic and can be smoothed with a heat gun if they ever bother you.

Being a sit-on-top, nobody is enclosed, water drains straight back out through the deck, and getting back aboard after a swim is a matter of pulling yourself over the side. In warm water that is a better safety proposition than a faster sit-in hull.

Questions

Good to know

The supplier says 2 to 3 people but only 150 kg - which is it?

Treat it as a two-person kayak. A 150 kg total load is two average adults with light gear, and nothing left over; three adults would exceed it. We have published the supplier's figure rather than a flattering one, and we would rather you knew. If you need to carry three, look at our 3.6 m hull instead.

Are paddles and seats included?

The listing covers the hull. Tell us how many paddles and seats you want and we will quote them with the boat - a padded backrest seat makes a large difference to comfort on a sit-on-top and is worth having.

Can one person paddle it solo?

Yes, sitting in the rear well or just behind centre so the bow does not lift. It will feel long and a little slow to turn on your own, but it works.

Will it fit on my car?

Yes. At 3.2 m and 30 kg it goes onto standard roof bars with two straps plus a bow line. It is the lightest tandem we stock, which is the main reason people choose it.

Where can I use it around Dar es Salaam?

Lagoons and channels inside the reef, the creeks around Kunduchi, Mbweni and Kigamboni, short settled-weather crossings to Bongoyo and Mbudya, and inland on the lakes and calm rivers.

How do I look after a plastic kayak in this climate?

Rinse it with fresh water after sea use and store it out of direct sun - under a tree, in a store room or under a cover. Polyethylene is tough, but constant equatorial UV eventually makes the surface chalky. Store it on its side or hanging, not resting flat on the hull in the sun.

Can I fit rod holders and an anchor trolley?

Yes - polyethylene takes fittings well and the deck has flat areas to mount to. Talk to us about what you want to fit and we will advise on hardware and placement.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes. A 3.2 m kayak needs proper transport, so tell us your destination and we will confirm options and cost before you order.
