Product description

About this product

Kindling, pegs and the jobs an axe head happens to suit.

A camp axe is not for felling. It is for splitting the wood you have into pieces that will actually light, driving pegs into hard ground, and breaking up what needs breaking. This one does that and folds several other functions into the same head: an ice pick, a pickaxe point, an extractor and a screwdriver.

The handle is the part that matters most on a small axe, because a short handle means your hand is close to the work. This one is textured to hold when wet, which is when accidents happen.

Key Features

  • Axe head for splitting kindling and driving pegs
  • Ice pick and pickaxe point
  • Extractor and screwdriver
  • Anti-slip textured handle
  • Stainless steel construction
  • Compact enough for a pack or vehicle

Who It Suits

  • Camp fires, for splitting wood into kindling
  • Driving and pulling tent pegs in hard ground
  • Vehicle and emergency kit

Safety: clear everyone from a full swing length around you before you start. Split on a solid block, never on the ground and never holding the wood with your other hand. A short axe brings the head close to your legs on a miss, so kneel to split rather than stooping.

Questions

Good to know

Can I fell a tree with it?

No, and you should not try. This is a camp axe for splitting and driving. Felling needs a full-size axe or a saw, more skill than most people have, and in most places permission you do not have.

How do I split safely with a short axe?

Kneel rather than stoop, so a miss goes into the ground rather than your shin. Stand the wood on a solid block. Never hold the piece you are splitting with your other hand: use a stick, or split from the far edge so the axe travels away from you.

Is stainless a good choice for an axe?

It resists rust, which in coastal humidity is a real benefit for a tool that lives in a vehicle. The trade is that stainless is generally softer than a carbon-steel axe head, so the edge dulls faster under heavy use. For kindling and pegs that is a fair trade; for daily hard chopping it is not.

How do I sharpen it?

A flat file or a coarse stone, working along the bevel from the handle outward on each side, then finish with a finer stone. Keep the original bevel angle rather than making it thinner, because a thin axe edge chips on knots.

How do I look after it?

Dry it and wipe the head with a light oil after use. Keep the edge covered in transit so it does not cut through a pack or somebody reaching in. Check the head is tight before each use.

How do I keep the head from rusting here?

Coastal humidity will rust a carbon steel edge within weeks if it is put away damp. Wipe the head dry after every use, keep a light film of oil on it, and store it out of a sealed bag. Rust on an axe head is not just cosmetic - it pits the edge and makes it harder to sharpen.
