Product description

About this product

Twenty-four brass steel tip darts at 21 g, supplied in a tube. This is the set a club, a bar, an office or a school buys – eight players’ worth of darts in one purchase.

Brass is the right material for this job and there is no need to apologise for it. It is softer and less dense than tungsten, so a brass barrel at a given weight is fatter and groups less tightly – which matters to a league player chasing three in a treble and matters not at all to eight people taking turns at a bar board. What brass gives you instead is durability against being dropped on a concrete floor, indifference to being lost, and a price that makes replacing a dart a non-event.

21 g is the standard steel tip weight and the most forgiving of an untrained throw, which is exactly right for a set that casual players will pick up.

Steel tip means a sisal bristle board. These will destroy an electronic board.

The 2BA thread is standard, so flights and shafts are cheap and universally available when they get broken – and in a shared set, they will.

Questions

Good to know

Who is a 24-dart set for?

Bars, clubs, offices, schools, compounds - anywhere several people play and darts get lost, dropped or borrowed. Eight players with three darts each, or a large stock of spares for a single board.

Is brass worse than tungsten?

For a shared board, no - it is better suited. Brass is fatter at a given weight so it groups less tightly, which matters to a league player and not at all to a casual one. What you get instead is durability, a price that makes a lost dart irrelevant, and no reason to worry about who is throwing them.

Brass or tungsten - what should I buy?

Brass is the right starting point for casual play and it is what most house darts are. 80 percent tungsten is the first properly serious step. 90 percent is the standard for league and professional play. Above 90 the gains get small and the price does not, so most players are better served by a well-shaped 90 percent barrel than by chasing 95.

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.

What is 2BA, and will these parts fit my darts?

2BA is the standard dart thread - 4.7 mm major diameter - and virtually every modern barrel, shaft and point uses it. The older alternative is a 1/4 inch thread, noticeably fatter and coarser, found on some cheap brass and house darts. They are not interchangeable and forcing one into the other strips the thread. Flights are not threaded at all, so any standard-shape flight fits any standard-shape shaft.

How should I sharpen a steel tip?

You are conditioning the point, not making it pointy. Roll the tip on the stone at a shallow angle, turning the dart as you go, until the burrs and flat spots from hitting wires are gone - ten or fifteen seconds is plenty. Leave it smooth and slightly rounded. A needle point is worse in every way: it skids off wires and bounces out, and it cuts sisal fibres instead of parting them, which puts permanent holes in the board.

How do I set the board up correctly?

The bullseye goes 1.73 m from the floor, and the throwing line sits 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board - measured to the board face, not the wall, because a board with a surround stands proud of it. Cross-check with the diagonal: 2.93 m from the centre of the bull to the back of the oche. If the diagonal does not match, one of your other two measurements is wrong.
