The Mavis 2000 is the top of Yonex-s nylon shuttlecock range, and the difference between it and the cheaper Mavis grades is real rather than marketing.
The skirt is the part that matters. Yonex build the 2000 with their Wing Rib structure – a ribbed moulding in the skirt that controls how the shuttle decelerates and stabilises in flight. A nylon skirt is a single moulded piece where a feather shuttle has sixteen individual feathers, and getting a moulded skirt to behave like those feathers is the whole engineering problem. Wing Rib is Yonex-s answer to it, and it is on the 2000 and not on the cheaper grades.
The base is natural cork with a nylon skirt. Cork is what gives a shuttle its feel off the strings – the way it compresses momentarily and comes away – and it is the reason cork-based nylon shuttles feel like badminton and synthetic-based ones feel like a toy. All three Mavis grades we stock use cork; the synthetic-base Mavis models are sold in other markets.
Yonex claim up to five times the life of an ordinary nylon shuttle. In practice that means a club can go through a session on one or two, where a feather shuttle might last a few rallies, and the running cost per hour of play is a fraction of feather.
One local point worth acting on: buy the slow grade. Shuttle speed is matched to air density, and warm air is thin. Dar es Salaam air is warm all year, so a medium or fast shuttle flies long and past the baseline. The slow grade – green cap – is what suits this climate, and most people here are playing on the wrong speed without realising it.
