About this product

Twenty-four litres is the sweet spot for most people: enough for a weekend of food and drink for two, or a full day at the beach for a family, while still being something one person can carry to the car.

It is a rigid moulded cooler with insulated walls, in beige. The pale colour is not only styling — a light-coloured box left in the sun absorbs noticeably less heat than a dark one, which shows up directly in how long your ice lasts.

What ice retention should I expect?

Naturehike does not publish an hours figure for this particular model and we are not going to invent one. In practice a pre-chilled 24 litre box packed properly will hold ice through a hot day and into the next morning. Ask us and we will tell you what customers report.

How do I get the most hours out of it?

Pre-chill the box overnight, fill it as full as you can, and use block ice rather than cubes. Air is what warms a cooler, so a full box holds far longer than a half-empty one, and every opening costs you.

How much ice do I need?

Roughly a third of the volume as ice for a hot Tanzanian day. Frozen water bottles do two jobs at once: they chill, and you drink them as they melt.

Should I drain the melt water?

Not straight away. Cold melt water keeps things cold better than the air that would replace it. Drain it when it stops being cold or when the food is sitting in it.

Where should it sit in the car?

Out of direct sun and off a hot floor if you can, and never in a closed boot in the sun with the lid facing up. Shade is worth more than insulation.

How do I stop it smelling?

Wash it out with warm water and bicarbonate of soda after every trip, dry it fully, and store it with the lid ajar. A cooler closed damp in Dar humidity will smell within a week.

Can I use dry ice in it?

No. Dry ice is far colder than the plastic is rated for and can crack the liner, and a sealed box with dry ice in it is a pressure risk.

Will it work as a warm box?

These are insulated, not heated. They will hold hot food warm for a while but they are designed to hold cold.
