Highlights

Pads protect the holder, not the puncher

The person catching the punches takes more punishment than the person throwing them. Thick padding, a curved face and a proper grip bar are what let a coach hold pads for six rounds without their wrists and elbows suffering - which is the only way pad work happens regularly.

Curved face

Angles the target towards the incoming punch, so the force goes into the padding rather than into the holder-s wrist.

Thick PU padding

Absorbs the impact instead of transmitting it through to the hand.

Gel-lined ball bulge

The grip inside the mitt, shaped so the hand can hold firm without cramping.

Back bar

A bar across the back of the mitt to brace against, which stops the mitt twisting on impact.

About this product

Pad for Boxing and – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

These are focus mitts – the pads a coach or training partner holds for you to punch.

Pad work is where boxing technique is actually built. A heavy bag builds power and conditioning but it does not move, does not present a target at a particular moment, and does not tell you anything about timing. A person holding pads gives you a target that appears and disappears, that can be moved, and that lets a coach call combinations and correct what they see. Almost everything about a boxer-s technique comes from rounds on the pads.

The design details on a pad are all about the holder. A curved face angles the target slightly towards the incoming punch, so the force drives into the padding rather than bending the holder-s wrist back. Thick PU padding absorbs rather than transmits. The gel-lined bulge inside is what the hand grips – shaped so a holder can keep a firm grip for a full round without the hand cramping. And the bar across the back gives something to brace against so the mitt does not twist when a punch lands off-centre.

Those things matter because the holder is the limiting factor. A puncher can go for rounds; a holder with poorly designed pads develops sore wrists and elbows and stops offering to hold, and then the pad work stops.

If you are new to holding: meet the punch. Push the pad slightly towards the incoming glove rather than letting it arrive – it absorbs far better and it protects your joints. And keep the pad square to the punch, not at an angle.

Questions

Good to know

Are they sold as a pair?

Pad work needs two - one for each hand of the holder. Check the option selected when you order, and ask us if it is not clear; a single mitt is of very limited use.

Why is pad work better than bag work?

Because it has timing in it. A bag does not move and does not present a target at a moment. Pads give you a target that appears and disappears, a coach who can call combinations, and immediate feedback on what you did. Technique is built on pads.

How do I hold pads without hurting my wrists?

Meet the punch - push the pad slightly towards the incoming glove rather than waiting for it. Keep the pad square to the punch and your elbow slightly bent, never locked straight. Holding badly is what makes people-s wrists and elbows hurt.

Can I use them for kicks?

Focus mitts are for hands. Kicks need a Thai pad or a kick shield, which are much larger and thicker. A low kick into a focus mitt will hurt the holder.

What size gloves should the puncher wear?

Training gloves, 14 or 16 oz for most adults. Do not do pad work in bag gloves with thin padding - the impact goes into the puncher-s hands, and the holder feels it too.

Do I need hand wraps as well as gloves?

Yes, always. The hand has 27 bones and a boxing glove protects the person you are hitting more than it protects you. Wraps hold the small bones of the hand together, support the wrist and stop the knuckles spreading on impact. Training without them is how long-term hand injuries happen.

How do I stop boxing gear smelling?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade with the gloves opened up. In Dar es Salaam humidity, gloves left zipped in a kit bag start to smell within two days and the lining rots within months. Glove dryers or a rolled newspaper inside overnight help a great deal.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
