The F155 is Junxing-s 66-inch takedown recurve: an aluminium alloy riser with bolt-on laminated limbs of fibreglass over a maple core. It is the shape of bow most clubs put a beginner on, and there are good reasons for that.

Length first. At 66 inches the string forms a shallow angle at full draw, so it does not pinch the fingers, and it sits consistently against the face. The bow is physically harder to twist, and the extra mass spread along its length damps the small movements that a short bow amplifies. Beginners shoot measurably better groups on a long recurve, and it is not close.

Takedown is the second reason. The limbs bolt to the riser, so the bow comes apart into a case that fits in a car or on a plane. More usefully, when you get stronger you buy limbs rather than a bow. The riser is the expensive, permanent part; limbs are consumable in the sense that you work through weights as your form develops.

The weight range runs 16 to 40 lb in two-pound steps, which is unusually fine and genuinely useful. Most beginners are best served somewhere between 18 and 26 lb – low enough to hold at full draw while an instructor corrects the shot, and that is where form gets built.

A recurve holds nothing back at full draw: unlike a compound there is no let-off, so you are holding the full draw weight the whole time you aim. That is why the weight you choose matters more on a recurve than on any other bow.

Good to know

What draw weight should a beginner buy?

Lower than you think. 18 to 26 lb for most adults new to archery, and 16 to 20 lb for a teenager. A recurve has no let-off, so you hold the full weight the entire time you aim - and form built at a comfortable weight is what makes you accurate later.

Can I buy heavier limbs later?

Yes, and that is the point of a takedown. The riser stays; you replace the limbs as your form and strength develop. It is far cheaper than replacing a whole bow and it means the bow keeps up with you.

Why is a 66 in bow better for a beginner than a short one?

The string angle at full draw is shallower, so it does not pinch your fingers or move against your face. The bow is harder to twist in the hand. And the extra length damps the small errors a short bow magnifies. Long bows are simply easier to shoot well.

What is brace height and does 8.25 in matter?

It is the distance from the string to the deepest part of the grip at rest. A higher brace height is more forgiving of a poor release and a little slower; a lower one is faster and less forgiving. 8.25 in sits on the forgiving side, which is right for this bow.

Does it come with a string?

It takes a 64 in / 1620 mm string. Check what is included when you order - a spare string is worth buying at the same time, because a recurve with a broken string is out of action until a replacement arrives.

What else do I need?

Arrows spined for your draw weight and length, an arm guard, a finger tab or shooting glove, and a target. Shooting a recurve bare-fingered is how you learn that an arm guard is not optional.

Can I hunt with a bow in Tanzania?

Bowhunting is legal in Tanzania but it is licensed separately and more strictly than rifle hunting - licence and area fees are charged at double the rifle rate, and dangerous game may not be taken with a bow. Arrange the licence through a registered outfitter before you plan a hunt. Target shooting and practice need no licence.
