Product description

About this product

Feathered Twin Assist Hooks – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Twin assist hooks give you two chances at a hook-up on a fish that hits the head of a jig, which is where jigging fish hit. What matters in how they are built is whether the two hooks share a cord or have one each. These are individually tied, so each hook swings independently – which is what lets both of them find purchase rather than one pulling the other out of position.

The hooks are forged from high carbon steel with a wide gape, and finished in bright tin, which is a proper saltwater plating rather than a paint. They are dressed with luminous tinsel flash: a feathered skirt that moves on the drop and glows at depth after a few seconds under a torch. On a jig fished at 80 metres, where there is almost no daylight, that glow is doing real work.

Three sizes are made – 1/0, 3/0 and 5/0 – to match light, medium and heavy jigs. As a rule the hook should be roughly a third to a half the length of the jig and hang level with its middle.

Around Dar es Salaam these belong on jigs fished over the reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles for grouper, snapper, jobfish, amberjack, kingfish and dogtooth tuna.

Questions

Good to know

What is an assist hook?

A short hook tied to braided cord and attached to the top eye of a jig, so it hangs beside the jig head rather than below the tail. Jigging fish attack the head, so that is where the hook needs to be - and because it swings free on cord, the weight of the jig cannot lever it out.

Why does individually tied matter?

Because each hook swings on its own cord and can move to where the fish is. On assists where both hooks share one cord, a fish taking one hook drags the other out of position. Individually tied is the better construction.

What does the feather and tinsel add?

Movement on the drop and a glow at depth. A dressed assist flutters as the jig falls and the luminous tinsel stays visible below 40 m where daylight has effectively gone. Charge it with a torch before you drop.

Which size should I use?

Match it to the jig, not to the fish. The hook should be roughly a third to a half the jig length and hang level with its middle - 1/0 for light jigs, 3/0 for medium, 5/0 for heavy. Tell us your jig weights and we will size it.

How long should the assist cord be?

Short - the hooks should hang roughly level with the middle of the jig, no further. Too long and they foul the jig on the drop; too short and they cannot swing into the mouth. Ready-tied assists are already proportioned for the jigs they are sold for.

Twin or single assist?

Twin gives two chances at a hook-up and suits bigger jigs and bigger fish; a single fouls less and is kinder to a released fish. A common rule is a twin above about 150 g of jig and a single below.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Grouper, snapper, jobfish, amberjack, kingfish and dogtooth tuna on the reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles.

How do I look after assist hooks?

Rinse in fresh water and dry them before storage. Check the cord for chafe and fraying after every trip - the cord fails before the hook does - and replace at the first sign of wear. Check the points on a thumbnail.
