About this product

The difference between a stickbait that catches fish and one that does not is usually what it does when you stop. A lure that sinks nose-first looks like a lure. One that sinks level, flat-sided and flashing, looks like a baitfish that has given up. The Speed Stix uses a sliding internal weight to achieve exactly that – the weight moves back on the cast for distance, and settles so the lure falls horizontally.

The rest is built for fish that break things. A stainless wire penetrates a reinforced high-density ABS body from end to end, so the hooks pull against steel. Over it goes Noeby Crystal Armor coating, which is what keeps a lure looking new after a season of teeth and coral. The flat-sided body is shaped for maximum flash on the roll.

Hooks are 4X-strength saltwater trebles, two per lure – 2/0 on the 160 mm, 3/0 on the 185 mm, 4/0 on the 205 mm – on strong split rings. Colours run 221, 222, 223, 224, 254 and 255.

Fish it with twitches, long sweeps, a pause-retrieve, or skittered across the top. Off Dar es Salaam it is the lure for the reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles, and for anything working bait on the surface – GT, kingfish, tuna, queenfish and big barracuda.

What does level sinking mean in practice?

The lure falls horizontally rather than nose-down. It matters because the fall is when most stickbait strikes happen - a lure that drops flat, flashing, looks like a dying baitfish; one that drops nose-first looks like a piece of plastic on a string.

Which size should I buy?

The 160 mm at 75 g for kingfish, queenfish and general inshore work on a normal spinning outfit; the 185 mm for bigger fish and longer casts; the 205 mm at 154 g for GT and tuna on heavy popping tackle. Match the lure to the rod, not just to the fish.

What rod and reel does it need?

The 160 mm suits a 5000-6000 spinning outfit on a 15-50 g rod; the 205 mm needs a proper popping rod and a 14000-18000 reel. Throwing 154 g on light tackle will break the rod before it catches anything.

Are the hooks good enough as supplied?

4X-strength saltwater trebles in 2/0 to 4/0 are a serious specification and better than most lures ship with. Noeby do not name the brand. For GT specifically, many anglers still upgrade to named hooks and heavier rings - ask us.

How do I fish it?

Four ways: short twitches with the rod low, long sweeps with a wind on each sweep, a pause-retrieve where you let it sink between pulls, or skittered fast across the surface. Start with sweeps and pauses.

What will take it around Dar es Salaam?

GT, kingfish, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, queenfish and big barracuda - the reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles, and anywhere bait is being pushed up.

What knot should I use?

A loop knot, or a heavy snap or split ring at the tow point, so the lure can swing freely. A tight knot snugged onto the eye kills the action.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every trip and dry the lure, hooks especially, before it goes back in the box. Salt left on trebles rusts them within days here, and a blunt or rusty point does not set.
