Highlights

It floats, which changes everything

A floating soft plastic sits in the surface film exactly like a real insect that has fallen in. Nothing sinking looks remotely like that, which is why fish take it so confidently.

Floating

Sits in the surface film rather than sinking - the only way to imitate a fallen insect properly.

5.6 cm

Big enough to cast on light tackle, small enough to look like the real thing.

Swamp green

A natural, muted colour that blends with the water and looks like what it is imitating.

Ten per pack

Enough to fish a session, and floating soft plastics tear like any other.

Product description

About this product

Almost every fish in fresh water eats insects at some point, and in still water at dusk they eat them off the surface. A floating soft plastic ant does something no other lure quite manages: it lies in the surface film, half in and half out, exactly as a real insect that has fallen in and cannot get out. Everything else you might cast either sinks or sits on top of the water rather than in it.

It is fished slowly and mostly not at all. Cast it near cover – overhanging branches, weed edges, lily pads – and leave it. Give it the occasional tiny twitch so the legs move, then leave it again. The take usually comes during a pause, and it is often a slow, deliberate sip rather than a slash.

At 5.6 cm it is big enough to cast on light tackle without needing added weight – rig it on a light wide-gap hook with no weight at all, which is what keeps it floating.

Swamp green is deliberately muted. This is a lure meant to look like a real insect rather than to attract attention, and a natural colour is the right choice for it.

In Tanzania this is an inland lure – bass, tilapia and perch in the still, weedy margins of lakes, dams and rivers, particularly in the last hour of light.

Questions

Good to know

How do I rig a floating soft plastic?

On a light wide-gap hook with no weight at all. Any added weight sinks it and destroys the point of the lure. Nose-hook it or rig it weedless through the body if you are fishing into cover.

How should I fish it?

Barely. Cast near cover and leave it. Give it an occasional tiny twitch so the legs move, then leave it again. The take usually comes on a pause, and is often a slow sip rather than a splash.

When do I strike?

Give it a second. A fish sipping an insect off the surface takes it slowly, and striking at the ring on the water pulls the bait away. Wait until you feel the line tighten, then lift into it.

Where does it work in Tanzania?

Inland, in still water - the weedy, sheltered margins of lakes, dams, ponds and slow rivers. Bass, tilapia and perch, particularly in the last hour of light when insects fall on the water.

Why such a plain colour?

Because this is an imitation, not an attractor. Swamp green looks like a real insect against weed and shade, which is exactly what you want when a fish is inspecting something at the surface in clear water.

What tackle do I need?

Light - a 2500 size reel on a light rod, with light braid and a fluorocarbon leader. You are casting a few grams of unweighted plastic, so heavy gear simply will not do it.

How long does one bait last?

Until it tears at the hook - usually several fish. Floating soft plastics tear like any other, which is why they come ten to a pack.

How do I store soft plastics in this heat?

Out of direct sun and out of a hot car, in their original bag. Heat deforms them, and different brands stored touching each other will melt together.
