Highlights

Small enough to always have with you

Packs to 75 cm and weighs about 200 grams. It lives in a backpack rather than a rod rack, which means you actually fish with it.

1.6 m, packs to 75 cm

Two sections, short enough for a backpack, a boot or a boat locker.

4-15 g lure rating

The light-lure range - small spoons, spinners, plugs and light jig heads.

Carbon blank, approx. 200 g

Light and responsive for the money, rather than the solid glass usual at this price.

Rod and reel together

Matched combo, so there is nothing else to work out before you fish.

Product description

About this product

A 1.6 m rod is a compromise, and a sensible one. It is short enough to pack down to 75 cm and live in a bag, and long enough to cast a light lure a useful distance and control a fish once hooked. At around 200 grams with a carbon blank, it is also light enough to fish all afternoon.

The 4-15 g lure rating tells you what it is for: small spoons, spinners, plugs, and light jig heads with small soft plastics. That is light-lure fishing – the way most people fish a creek mouth, a jetty, a river or a dam. On the coast it will handle small queenfish, barracuda, mullet and snapper close in; inland it is a good rod for tigerfish and bass.

It comes as a combo with a matched reel, so the outfit works out of the box. Fast action gives you a responsive tip for detecting bites and setting hooks, which is what you want with small lures and light line.

What it is not is a distance rod. If you want to cast off a beach or fish the rocks, the length works against you and a 1.8 m or 2.1 m rod is the better buy – we stock telescopic kits in both.

Questions

Good to know

What can I catch with it?

Close-range fish on light lures: queenfish, small barracuda, mullet and snapper off a jetty or from a small boat, and tigerfish, bass and Nile perch inland. It is a light outfit and is honest about it.

Is 4-15 g a useful lure range?

For light lure fishing, yes - it covers small spoons, spinners, hard plugs and a 2-4 in soft plastic on a light jig head. Above 15 g the rod will not cast it well and you risk the blank.

How does it compare with the 1.35 m combo with the tackle set?

This one is longer, so it casts further and gives more control; the 1.35 m version is shorter and comes with a 28-piece tackle set. Choose by whether you want length or a box of terminal tackle.

Is it a telescopic rod?

No - it is a two-piece rod that separates into two 75 cm sections. Our 1.8 m and 2.1 m kits are the telescopic ones, and they collapse further, to 42.5 cm.

Can I use it in the sea?

Yes, close in and within its lure rating. Rinse the rod and reel in fresh water afterwards; a budget reel is much less tolerant of neglected salt than an expensive one.

Is it suitable for a beginner?

It is a good first outfit for an adult or an older child. It is light, forgiving, comes with a matched reel, and costs little enough that learning on it is not expensive.

How should I look after a budget outfit in salt water?

Rinse the rod and reel in fresh water after every session and dry them before storage. A cheap reel will survive years of freshwater use and one season of neglected salt. Put a drop of light oil on the handle knob and bail pivot occasionally and it will last far longer than it cost.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide, and a 75 cm parcel travels easily. Tell us your location and we will quote.
