An 18 g soft tip set from WIN.MAX, for electronic dartboards.

18 g is the standard soft tip weight, and it is not an arbitrary choice. Electronic boards impose a maximum dart weight – commonly 18 or 20 g – because a heavier dart hits the plastic segments hard enough to crack the webbing and shorten the board’s life. Soft tip darts are therefore lighter than steel tip ones as a rule, and 18 g is the safe centre of that range.

The plastic point flexes on impact and the board’s sensors register the hit, which is what lets a machine score automatically. It also means the points are consumables – they snap and bend, and a supply of spares is part of owning soft tip darts rather than an optional extra.

These are for electronic boards only. Soft tips will not penetrate compressed sisal reliably; on a bristle board they bounce out and the tips bend.

Steel tip or soft tip - which do I need?

Steel tip darts have a metal point and go into a sisal bristle board. Soft tip darts have a flexible plastic point and go into an electronic board. Never throw steel tips at an electronic board: the point punches through the plastic segments and can wreck the sensors underneath, and that is not repairable. Soft tips on a bristle board simply bounce out.

Why are soft tip darts lighter than steel tip?

Because electronic boards impose a maximum dart weight, commonly 18 or 20 g, to protect the plastic segments. A heavier dart cracks the webbing and shortens the board's life. 18 g is the safe centre of the soft tip range.

Unscrew the old one by hand, or use a dart tool if it has sheared off inside the barrel. Thread the new one in finger-tight only; plastic threads strip easily if you force them.

What is 2BA, and will these parts fit my darts?

2BA is the standard dart thread - 4.7 mm major diameter - and virtually every modern barrel, shaft and point uses it. The older alternative is a 1/4 inch thread, noticeably fatter and coarser, found on some cheap brass and house darts. They are not interchangeable and forcing one into the other strips the thread. Flights are not threaded at all, so any standard-shape flight fits any standard-shape shaft.

How do I set the board up correctly?

The bullseye goes 1.73 m from the floor, and the throwing line sits 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board - measured to the board face, not the wall, because a board with a surround stands proud of it. Cross-check with the diagonal: 2.93 m from the centre of the bull to the back of the oche. If the diagonal does not match, one of your other two measurements is wrong.
