Product description

About this product

The KMC X12 is the 12-speed chain in the X-Series, here in the silver finish. 126 links, 234 g on KMC’s published figure, and the matching connector is the KMC CL552.

Before anything else, the compatibility point that matters most: KMC state explicitly that the X12 is not compatible with SRAM T-Type Transmission, SRAM eTap AXS, or SRAM Flattop road chains. Those systems use different roller and pin geometry. This is not a shifting inconvenience – it is a chain that should not be fitted to those drivetrains at all. If your bike runs SRAM AXS or Transmission, stop here and talk to us.

What it is confirmed to fit is SRAM Eagle and Campagnolo 12-speed, across MTB, road, gravel and cyclocross. On Shimano 12-speed, KMC’s own corporate site and their US store contradict each other, so we would rather flag that than assert it – ask us and we will check with the supplier before you order.

Supplied at 126 links and must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting.

Questions

Good to know

Which 12-speed drivetrains does it NOT fit?

This is the important one. KMC state the X12 is not compatible with SRAM T-Type (Transmission), SRAM eTap AXS, or SRAM Flattop road chains. Those systems use different roller and pin geometry, and fitting an X12 to one is a safety problem rather than just a shifting one. If you run any SRAM AXS or Transmission groupset, this is not your chain.

Does it work with Shimano 12-speed?

KMC own two official sites and they do not agree on this - their corporate site lists Shimano among the compatible 12-speed systems, their US store does not. We would rather tell you that than guess. SRAM Eagle and Campagnolo 12-speed are confirmed by both. If you run Shimano 12-speed, talk to us before ordering and we will check with the supplier.

Do I need to shorten the chain?

Almost certainly. Chains are supplied over-length so they fit the widest range of bikes, and yours must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. You will need a chain tool. If you are not sure how many links to remove, bring the bike to us with the old chain and we will size it against it.

Is a quick link included?

KMC do not state on their own product pages that a connector is packed in the box, and they sell MissingLink connectors as separate items, so we do not claim one is included. Check the packet - and if it is not there, the matching KMC connector is CL555 for 11-speed and CL552 for 12-speed. Ask us and we will confirm before you ride.

How often should I replace a chain?

Measure it rather than guessing - a chain checker costs very little. Replace at around 0.5% stretch for a 11 or 12-speed drivetrain and 0.75% for wider chains. A worn chain left on will wear the cassette and chainrings to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one.

Will it last in Tanzanian conditions?

Chain life here is set by cleaning, not by brand. Fine dust bound into chain lube becomes an abrasive paste, and that paste is what wears the rollers and pins. Clean and re-lube regularly and a chain lasts as it should; neglect it and no chain will.

How do I know it is genuine?

KMC publish a fake-chains page of their own because counterfeits are a real problem in this region. We buy through the proper supply chain rather than open marketplaces. A counterfeit chain can fail under load, which is not a risk worth taking on a component this cheap.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
