Product description

About this product

The blue cleat sits between the red and the yellow, but the interesting part is not the amount of float – it is where the pivot is.

SM-SH12 gives 2 degrees of float, 1 degree either side, and Shimano place the pivot point at the front of the cleat rather than in the centre. That changes the character of the movement entirely. With a front pivot, lateral sliding is eliminated – the ball of the foot stays put over the pedal axle – while the heel is still free to swing through its small arc. You get the stability of a fixed cleat at the point where power is delivered, and a little freedom where the knee needs it.

That makes it a sensible middle ground for a rider who finds 6 degrees of yellow float vague underfoot but is not confident going to a fully fixed red cleat. Plenty of riders end up here having tried both.

Release angle is 12 degrees. As with all SPD-SL cleats, they fit three-bolt road shoes and SPD-SL pedals only.

Questions

Good to know

What does a front pivot point actually change?

It stops the foot sliding sideways. With a centred pivot the whole foot can shift laterally as it rotates; with the pivot at the front, the ball of the foot stays fixed over the pedal axle and only the heel moves. Power delivery feels more stable while the knee still gets some freedom.

Should I choose blue over yellow?

Try yellow first if you are new to clipless pedals. Move to blue if 6 degrees feels vague underfoot and you want a more connected feel without going to a fully fixed cleat. Many riders settle here after trying both.

What is float and why does it matter?

Float is how far your heel can swing sideways while the shoe stays clipped in. Your knee does not track in a perfectly straight line as you pedal, and float lets it follow its natural path. Too little float for your body forces the knee to fight the pedal, which is how cleat choice becomes a knee injury.

Will these fit my shoes and pedals?

These are SPD-SL road cleats. They bolt to a three-bolt road shoe and clip into SPD-SL road pedals only. They will not fit two-bolt SPD mountain bike shoes or SPD pedals, which is the commonest mistake people make ordering cleats. Check your shoe sole - three holes in a triangle means SPD-SL, two holes in a line means SPD.

Can I make clipping out easier?

Yes - on the pedal, not the cleat. Shimano SPD-SL pedals have an adjustable spring tension screw. Wind it to the softest setting while you are learning, then tighten it once clipping out is second nature.

How should I set them up?

Start with the cleat centred under the ball of your foot and the shoe pointing straight ahead, then ride and adjust in small steps. If you have any history of knee trouble, a proper bike fit is worth more than any component you could buy. We can point you to someone.

How often do cleats need replacing?

When the walking pads are visibly worn down, when you can rock the shoe in the pedal, or when unclipping starts feeling unpredictable. Worn cleats release unexpectedly, which is how people fall at junctions. They are a cheap part - replace them before they become a problem.

Are they awkward to walk in?

Road cleats always are - the cleat sits proud of the sole. Shimano shape the SPD-SL cleat to give a stable walking platform and to resist clogging, but treat it as walking across a cafe, not hiking. Cleat covers are worth having.
