Highlights

Six tools, six problems

A drivetrain is the one part of a bike a single brush cannot clean.

Shaped for the hard parts

Between sprockets, inside the chain, around jockey wheels - places one brush cannot reach.

Bikes and motorcycles

The same problem at a different scale, and the same tools solve it.

The cheapest maintenance there is

Abrasive paste wears drivetrains out. Removing it costs a few minutes.

Use a degreaser

Water moves dust. Only a degreaser lifts the oily part that does the damage.

Product description

About this product

Six brushes and tools for cleaning a drivetrain, on a bicycle or a motorcycle.

The reason a drivetrain needs its own set rather than one general brush is reach. A cassette has eight to twelve sprockets a couple of millimetres apart; a chain has an inner cavity you cannot see into; jockey wheels sit in a cage with almost no clearance. A kit like this gives you a narrow brush for between sprockets, a chain-shaped brush that works several faces at once, a stiff detail brush for chainrings and mechs, and a scraper or gear-tooth tool for the packed grime that bristles cannot shift.

Why it matters here more than elsewhere: fine dust bound into chain lube becomes an abrasive paste. That paste – not pedalling – is what wears out rollers, pins and sprocket teeth. Removing it regularly is the cheapest drivetrain maintenance there is, and it is the difference between a chain lasting a season and lasting three.

Use the brushes with a degreaser rather than water alone. Water moves loose dust; only a degreaser lifts the oily part. Spray, wait about thirty seconds, agitate, then rinse and dry thoroughly before re-lubricating.

Questions

Good to know

Why do I need a set rather than one brush?

Reach. Cassette sprockets sit millimetres apart, chains have an inner cavity, jockey wheels have almost no clearance. Each brush in a set is shaped for one of those problems, and no single brush solves all of them.

Do I need a degreaser as well?

Yes. Water alone moves loose dust but not the oily paste bound into the drivetrain. Spray a degreaser or drivetrain cleaner, let it work about thirty seconds, then agitate with the brushes and rinse.

What is the right order to wash a bike?

Rinse the worst off with low pressure, degrease and clean the drivetrain first so its grime does not run over clean paint, then wash the frame and wheels, rinse, dry, and lubricate the chain last. Doing the chain first and the frame second is the single commonest mistake.

Can I use it on a motorcycle chain?

Yes. A motorcycle drivetrain has the same problem on a larger scale, and the brushes work the same way. Let the chain and sprockets cool before you start.

What do I do with the dirty water?

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.

Why does drying the bike matter so much here?

Because of the salt and the humidity. Water left standing in bolt heads, on the chain and around the cassette starts corrosion quickly on the coast. Dry the bike, then lubricate - ten minutes that adds years to a drivetrain.

Is this the right choice for Tanzanian conditions?

For most of the year around Dar es Salaam you are riding in heat and fine dust, which is dry-lube territory - a dry or wax lube leaves a drier film that dust does not stick to. Switch to a wet lube through the long rains in March to May and the short rains in November and December, when washing off matters more than staying clean.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
