This is a leather cricket ball in white – a club and practice grade ball.
The economics of cricket balls are worth understanding when buying for a club or a school. A premium match ball is expensive, is used for one innings, and is then retired to net duty anyway. Practice consumes balls at a much higher rate: a net session with four bowlers, throwdowns, slip catching and a junior group will go through a box, and a proportion of them will end up over a fence or in long grass. A club that only buys match balls does not practise.
What matters is that it is leather. Practising with a synthetic ball teaches the wrong thing – it swings differently, bounces differently and feels different in the hand. Bowlers especially need to practise with the material they will bowl with.
White is the colour for limited-overs and floodlit cricket. Red is the traditional choice for daylight cricket in whites; white is for limited-overs and floodlit games against coloured clothing.
Our supplier does not publish a weight, a piece count or a seam row count. Under the Laws of Cricket a men-s ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm. If an exact weight matters for a competition, ask us and we will weigh the stock.
A leather ball is hard and fast. Nobody should face one without a helmet, gloves, pads and an abdominal guard – including in the nets, where most cricket injuries actually happen.
