Highlights

Sized right down to the smallest junior

Junior pads are where most clubs and schools struggle. A pad sized for an adult on a nine-year-old reaches the hip, fouls their running and teaches them to hate wearing it. This range starts at extra-small junior, which is the size that is usually missing.

Five sizes

XS Junior, S Junior, Junior, Youth and Adult - a genuine junior range rather than one small size.

Cotton-filled knee rolls

Traditional bolsters that spread an impact on the kneecap and let the pad bend for running.

Top hat and side wing protection

Extra material above the knee and around the outside of the leg, where the painful hits land.

Hard-wearing instep piping

The section that drags on the ground when you run, reinforced.

About this product

Rp Club Batting Pads – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The SG RP Club is a club-grade batting leg guard in PVC, from the Rishabh Pant line, sized from extra-small junior up to adult.

The size range is the notable thing here. Fitting junior cricketers properly is a persistent problem for schools and clubs, because most ranges offer one or two junior sizes and then jump to youth. A pad that is too long for a child reaches the hip, catches on itself when they run, and makes batting so awkward that they stop wanting to pad up at all – which is how children end up facing hard balls in inadequate kit.

The construction is conventional and sound. Cotton-filled knee rolls across the front of the knee spread the impact of a ball on the joint and let the pad hinge so you can run. Foam reinforcement sits behind them. Extra material on the top hat – the section above the knee – and on the side wing covers the two places a ball lands that a plain flat pad would miss.

The instep is the part that fails first on any pad. It is the section under the foot that drags along the ground on every single, and hard-wearing piping there is a genuine durability feature rather than a detail.

Measure before ordering: kneecap centre to the top of the shoe, with the leg slightly bent. And tell us whether the player bats right or left handed.

Questions

Good to know

How do I size batting pads?

Measure from the centre of the kneecap down to the top of the shoe with the leg slightly bent, and match that to the size chart. A pad that is too long fouls the instep and trips you running between the wickets; too short and it leaves the knee exposed.

Do I need left-hand or right-hand pads?

Usually yes. Batting pads are normally made in handed pairs, because the side-wing protection sits on the outside of each leg relative to the stance. Wearing the wrong pair leaves the outside of the leg unprotected. Tell us whether you bat right or left handed and we will confirm what the stock is.

Why does the junior size range matter so much?

Because a badly fitting pad on a child is worse than useless. Too long and it reaches the hip, catches when they run and makes batting miserable, so they avoid wearing it. Five sizes from extra-small junior upwards is what lets a school kit out a whole age group properly.

What is the top hat?

The section of the pad above the knee roll, covering the lower thigh. A rising ball that beats the bat often lands there, which is why a pad with reinforcement at the top hat is worth having.

Which part of a pad wears out first?

The instep, under the foot, which drags on the ground every time you run. Check it at the start of each season - a worn instep will suddenly give way mid-season.

How should protective equipment fit?

Snug enough that it does not move when you do, loose enough not to restrict you. Pads should let you run; gloves should let you grip without gaps at the fingertips; a helmet should not rock when you shake your head. Kit that moves on impact is protecting the wrong place at the wrong moment.

How do I look after protective gear in this climate?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade. Padding and straps that stay damp in a closed kit bag grow mould and rot within weeks here - far faster than the equipment wears out from use. This is the single thing that decides how long cricket kit lasts in Tanzania.
