About this product

This is the SS Platino batting leg guard in the boys size, made for a left-handed batsman.

The construction is traditional and worth explaining. Sewn vertically inside the pad are cane rods – the skeleton that gives the pad its shape and its stiffness. Cane is used because it is light, springy and strong: it holds the pad-s profile against the leg so the bolsters sit where they are supposed to, and it springs back rather than taking a permanent bend. A pad without proper rods collapses in use, and once it has collapsed the padding is no longer over the parts of the leg it was designed to cover.

Behind the facing sit high-density foam bolsters and dual-density sponge – graded so the heavier material is at the knee and the side wing, where a ball actually lands, and lighter material is elsewhere so the pad does not weigh the leg down.

This is the left-hand pair. Batting pads are handed because the reinforced side wing sits on the outside of each leg relative to the stance; a left-hander wearing a right-hander-s pair has the heavy protection on the inside of the legs, where it does nothing, and the outside exposed. That sounds pedantic until a ball finds the unprotected side.

Boys size suits a junior player. Measure from the centre of the kneecap to the top of the shoe with the leg slightly bent, and tell us the figure – we will confirm it against the stock before shipping.

Why do batting pads come in left and right hand versions?

Because the reinforced side wing sits on the outside of each leg relative to your stance. A left-hander wearing right-hand pads has the heavy protection on the inside of the legs and the outside exposed - which is where the ball goes.

What do the cane rods do?

They are the pad-s skeleton. Cane is light, springy and strong, and it holds the pad-s shape against the leg so the padding stays where it was designed to sit. A pad whose rods have broken or bent no longer protects properly, wherever the foam is.

How do I size a boys pad?

Measure from the centre of the kneecap to the top of the shoe with the leg slightly bent. Tell us the measurement and we will match it to the stock - a pad that is too long catches when a child runs and makes them reluctant to wear it.

Can a right-hander use these?

Not properly. They will go on, but the protection will be on the wrong side of the leg. Tell us you need right hand and we will confirm what is in stock.

How should protective equipment fit?

Snug enough that it does not move when you do, loose enough not to restrict you. Pads should let you run; gloves should let you grip without gaps at the fingertips; a helmet should not rock when you shake your head. Kit that moves on impact is protecting the wrong place at the wrong moment.

How do I look after protective gear in this climate?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade. Padding and straps that stay damp in a closed kit bag grow mould and rot within weeks here - far faster than the equipment wears out from use. This is the single thing that decides how long cricket kit lasts in Tanzania.

When should pads be replaced?

When a cane rod has snapped, when the instep has worn through, when the padding has hardened or compressed flat, or when the straps no longer hold. Pads usually look serviceable long after they have stopped protecting properly.
