About this product

The SG Players Xtreme is a club and amateur batting leg guard in navy blue PVC.

The thing to understand about a batting pad is that the protection is deliberately uneven. A ball that hits the lower shin hurts; a ball that hits the knee or the outside of the leg can end a season. So a well-made pad concentrates high-density foam in the knee area and the side wing – the outer panel that shields the side of the leg – and uses lighter material lower down. That is what multi-density construction means, and it is why a good pad is both better protected and lighter than a cheap one padded uniformly.

The knee rolls are the horizontal bolsters across the front of the knee. Cotton-filled rolls are the traditional construction and they do a specific job: they spread the impact of a ball landing on the kneecap across a wider area, and they let the pad bend at the joint so you can run.

The instep is what most people never think about and what fails first. It is the section under the foot that drags on the ground every time you run a single, and on a cheap pad it wears through within a season. A wear-resistant PVC instep is worth having.

Sizing and handedness both matter. Measure from the middle of the kneecap to the top of the shoe, and tell us whether you bat right or left handed – the side wing is on the outside of each leg relative to your stance, so the wrong pair leaves the outside of the leg unprotected.

How do I size batting pads?

Measure from the centre of the kneecap down to the top of the shoe, with the leg slightly bent. SG-s guide is roughly 40-42 cm for Junior, 42-43 cm Youth, 43-44 cm Small Adult and 44-46 cm Adult. A pad that is too long fouls the instep and trips you running; too short and it leaves the knee exposed at exactly the wrong moment.

Do I need left-hand or right-hand pads?

Yes, and it matters. Batting pads are made in handed pairs because the side-wing protection is on the outside of each leg relative to the stance. Wearing the wrong pair puts the reinforced wing on the inside, where it does nothing, and leaves the outside of the leg unprotected. Tell us whether you bat right or left handed.

What is the side wing and why does it matter?

The panel that wraps round the outside of the leg. It is where a ball that misses the front of the pad lands, and it is the area most likely to be under-protected on a cheap pad. SG put high-density foam there deliberately.

What are knee rolls for?

The horizontal bolsters across the knee do two jobs: they spread the impact of a ball landing on the kneecap, and they let the pad hinge at the joint so you can run between the wickets. A pad with no knee roll is stiff and protects the joint badly.

Which part wears out first?

How should protective equipment fit?

Snug enough that it does not move when you do, loose enough not to restrict you. Pads should let you run; gloves should let you grip without gaps at the fingertips; a helmet should not rock when you shake your head. Kit that moves on impact is protecting the wrong place at the wrong moment.

How do I look after protective gear in this climate?

Take it out of the bag the moment you get home and let it dry in the shade. Padding and straps that stay damp in a closed kit bag grow mould and rot within weeks here - far faster than the equipment wears out from use. This is the single thing that decides how long cricket kit lasts in Tanzania.
